Hoa Than was a great god under the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. He is known to be a famous great sightseeing in Chinese history.

Originally a son of Manchuria (China), the Hoa Than family’s family was not outstanding, but it was also a military family.

Hoa Than’s wealth is so great that in folklore there is a legend that “If the Qianlong has, the Hoa Than has; if the Qianlong does not have it, it may not mean that the Hoa Than does not exist”. Hoa Than’s total fortune is estimated at about 1,100 million taels of silver, many rumors say that it is equivalent to the amount of money that the Qing state treasury took 15 years to collect.
Hoa Than has the last name “Hoa”?
In the historical dramas of the Qing Dynasty, whenever the character Hoa Than appeared, everyone called him “Hoa Dai”. Therefore, many people confuse Hoa Than with the last name “Hoa”.
Actually, Hoa Than is not Hoa. He is a Manchurian Chinh Hong Ky, belonging to the Nuu Ho Loc tribe, whose real name is Thien Bao, after going to school, his name was changed to Hoa Than. Thus, Hoa Than’s full name must be Nuu Ho Loc Hoa Than.
The Nuu Hu Loc family is the oldest family of the Manchus. In this family, in addition to the god Hoa Than during the Qianlong period, there are also many famous celebrities such as the famous general of the Qing Dynasty, the official residence of Hoang Thai Chi is Nguyen consort, the second empress of the Emperor. Back in the Qianlong period, the great officials in the court called Niu Hu Loc Hoa Than “Hoa Da Nhan”, “Hoa Trung Duong”.
This is because, Baqi Manchuria has the traditional custom of “calling names without reminding them”. In daily life, the Manchu people will ignore the surnames such as Niu Hu Loc, Qua Er Giai, Ai Tan Giac La, Phu Cha… but directly call the names. If it weren’t for important ceremonial cases, the Manchus would not have called each other by their surnames.
Therefore, Hoa Than, when writing for the court, often called himself “God, Hoa Than”, rather than calling himself Nuu Ho Loc Hoa Than.
The Qing Dynasty absorbed the Trung Nguyen culture. In Trung Nguyen culture, it is customary to call “last name + official position” to show respect. The Qing Dynasty’s court also began to form this custom.
Because the surname of the Han people is relatively simple, the first and last names combined normally only have 2-3 characters. Even if you add double surnames like Au Duong, Murong… at most, there are only 4 letters, so there’s no problem with such a name. Meanwhile, the Manchu names are relatively complicated, communication with the Han people is relatively difficult. So the Manchus began to learn to call each other only by first names, not including surnames.
For example, the famous Qing Dynasty general Phu Sat Phuc Khang An, the rightful god of the Kangxi Dynasty, Sa Ly Sach Ngach Do, were all “Phu Da Nhan”, “Book of a man” or “Phuc General”, “Book of the Middle Way”.
Therefore, the TV series called Nuu Hu Loc Hoa Than “Hoa Dai” is completely consistent with history.
It is noteworthy that, since Hoa Than of the Niu Hulu clan was one of the eight great families of Manchuria, and there were also several empresses in this family, so they had a privilege, which was to be allowed to marry. the first letter in the family to make “false surname”, i.e. the Nuu Huloc clan can be called “Nu” for short.
Also because of this privilege, the word Niu was gradually derived from the word Lang, eventually forming the current Lang family.
Since the Qing Dynasty, many famous people have appeared in Lang Thi. Calligrapher of Thanh Lang Dynasty Bao Than, governor of Giang Tay Lang Dinh Ta, along with other contemporary celebrities. Today, the Manchu people with the Lang surname may be the same ancestor as Hoa Than.
In fact, after the end of the Qing Dynasty, Ai Tan Giac La Thi, Phu Sat Thi and other Manchu clans all changed their names. Ai Tan Giac La Thi changed to “Kim”; Phu Sat Thi changed to “Phu” or “Deputy”; Through Nhi Giai, it was changed to “Quan”, “Thach”, “To”, “Ly”, “Cao”; Diep Ha Na Lala has been changed to “Diep” or “Na”.
