A group of fans brought the first Jack and Daxter game from Naughty Dog to PC, and it’s now completely playable from start to finish.
Naughty Dog’s Jak and Daxter was first released on PS2 in 2001 and it is remembered by many gamers to this day. While the game had several sequels and several spin-offs that took the game in a more engaging direction, the first game was hailed as a quintessential collectible and platformer experience. Today, aside from the re-release of the trilogy on PS4, Jak and Daxter’s IP has been mostly ignored by Naughty Dog in favor of more gritty and platforming games like The Last of Us.
While its original developers have focused their attention on other projects, the fans have not forgotten this classic IP. Some Jak and Daxter fans still hold out hope that the iconic PlayStation franchise might return, while others are shouldering things on their own. This includes a group of fans who are porting the entire trilogy to modern PC platforms.
This project was made by a group of fans, all with the goal of porting the first Jak and Daxter game to PC. According to the project’s GitHub page, this is a daunting task as the game’s source code is written in a custom programming language created by Naughty Dog. This required the team to create their own decompiler that could break the code into something a PC could read, extract its contents, and then put it into a native application that could run on Linux and Windows.
The latest update noted that the team has analyzed most of the levels and now fans can play all of Jak and Daxter from start to finish. Even in this state, the player can end the game with 100% completion. Players rejoice that they can now play the original game on PC, with this platform port even adding some quality improvements. This includes a 16×9 aspect ratio, HD resolution, subtitles, and support for ultra-wide screens.
As for the next aspect of the team behind this PC version, while the game is fully playable, some bug testing is needed to perfect the experience. There are also plans to tweak the source code and add more QOL features like the skip cutscene button. As mentioned earlier, the team also plans to port the sequels from the Jak and Daxter trilogy, Jak 2 and 3. This release will be interesting to many fans of the franchise, as it makes it easy for them. easy access to the original game if they’re looking for a nostalgic trip into the memory domain.
