Akutami’s story follows Yuji, a high school student who joins a secret organization to become a Jujutsu Mage after he accidentally becomes the host of Ryomen Sukuna, the undisputed Curse King. When the manga was released in March 2018, Jujutsu Kaisen quickly gained a fan following; As of April 2022, the series has sold over 65 million copies. The manga has also performed extremely well with critics and industry experts alike, being nominated for the 65th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2019 and winning the Mandō Kobayashi Manga Grand Prize in 2020.
The Jujutsu Kaisen manga series has been adapted into an anime by MAPPA (Attack on Titan: The Final Season) with the first season airing in 2020 and the second season slated to premiere in 2023. Like the manga, the anime has achieved much success. At the fifth annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Jujutsu Kaisen won Animation of the Year, Best Villain, and Best Epilogue.
Other recent developments for the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise include a live-action script adaptation of the story, which will premiere in Tokyo this summer. Pictures of the cast in comics-like costumes have been posted online to promote upcoming performances.
Furthermore, the anime’s combined prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, recently hit the $30 million mark at the US box office. As previously reported, the film is the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2021 and one of the highest-grossing animated films ever, along with the classics like Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. The financial success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has prompted many actors to speak out about the unfair pay for voice actors. Tara Jayne Sands, who played Momo Nishimiya and Utahime Iori in the English dub, revealed she was only paid $150 for her role in the film. Kaiji Tang, who plays the fan of Satoru Gojo, also made similar criticisms of the anime dubbing industry.
