Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen
Fan Jujutsu Kaisen has been eagerly waiting to see if and when protagonist Yuji Itadori will unleash Domain Expansion, one of the most formidable abilities in the arsenal of witches and cursed spirits alike. It is rare for witches to achieve this state as it requires mastery of many aspects of Jujutsu and cursed techniques. Therefore, it is not surprising that the main character, Itadori Yuji, has not yet mastered it, as cursed techniques are not his strong point.
However, the recently released chapters #257 and #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen shed some new light on how Yuji was able to take a shortcut and achieve this ability. Surprisingly, Yuji, who was previously unable to use cursed techniques, was shown using Sukuna's Evil Shrine in chapter #257. Then, in chapter #258, he took it a step further by using a Simple Domain to counter the Cursed King's domain. These events shed light on Yuji's unexpected mastery of these techniques, providing explanations tied to a mysterious panel from #chap 222 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
The “soul swap” training shown through flashbacks suggests that Yuji may be close to mastering or may have already mastered the use of Domain Expansion. With this development, it seems inevitable that Yuji will soon liberate his domain in a showdown with Sukuna, the formidable cursed king.
The expansion of Yuji's domain could be an echo of Sukuna's power
Since Sukuna used Range Expansion in Yuji's body, there is a possibility that Yuji could regenerate it.
In Chapter #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled “The Inhumane Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 30”, it is revealed how Itadori Yuji and Atsuya Kusakabe have switched bodies. As this chapter opens, Sukuna is forced to use his Domain Expansion Ability, creating a critical moment where a counterattack becomes imperative. The available options are to open your own domain or use a simple domain name. Before Yuji enters the simple domain, a flashback explains how Ui Ui's cursed technique facilitated the soul swap between Kusakabe and Yuji.
The purpose behind the body swap was so that Kusakabe could use simple domain while living in Yuji's body, allowing Yuji's body to retain this technique through muscle memory. Therefore, Yuji is capable of using the forbidden technique of the simple domain. Additionally, the soul swap sheds light on how Yuji can also use the Shrine of Malice. Applying this same reasoning to the expansion of Sukuna's domain while residing in Yuji's body, Itadori could really take advantage of Sukuna's evil temple domain expansion or something very similar to it.
Sukuna's own domain against him would be a perfect counterattack
Yuji seems to be becoming a better version of Sukuna
Chapter #257 of Jujutsu Kaisen delves into the striking similarities between Sukuna and Yuji, stemming from their shared souls. It suggests that overcoming Sukuna would require powers similar to his own or a manifestation originating from him. Given that Yuji has evolved into Sukuna's closest clone, it makes sense that he would be capable of defeating Sukuna by harnessing the same power. This narrative choice not only adds depth to Yuji's character, but also provides insight into why Gege Akutami chose Itadori as the central protagonist.
The prospect of Yuji using his Domain Extension Ability to trap Sukuna, especially since Sukuna herself is currently unable to manifest a domain, presents an intriguing scenario. Fans have been wondering for years Will Yuji's domain name be extended?and if he truly replicated Sukuna's Temple of Evil, this would emphasize the complexity of their relationship in Jujutsu Kaisen.
