Popular horror manga artist and creator Junji Ito illustrated the manga synopsis for Robert Eggers’ 2019 film The Lighthouse to celebrate the film’s release in Japan this July. The Lighthouse will open in theaters in Japan on July 9, and Ito’s manga will be included in theater pamphlets that will be sold at screenings. Two pages of the manga were offered for preview prior to the film’s release:
Ito commented that he was impressed by the clear black-and-white presentation and somber atmosphere of the film, and wanted to capture those aspects in his manga. Ito commented: “I wanted to recreate the distorted interactions between [các nhân vật] and each other’s delicate facial expressions, and above all, intense light and shadow dominate the film screen,” commented Ito.
