Kamado Tanjiro is the main character of the Kimetsu no Yaiba series, but certainly cannot surpass Yoriichi for the following reasons.
Yoriichi Tsugikuni is the strongest Swordsman that ever existed in the world of Kimetsu no Yaiba. He was the one who gave birth to the Breath of the Sun and almost defeated the Demon Lord Muzan. Meanwhile, Tanjiro has a ‘main character aura’, but fans are sure that he can’t come close to Yoriichi’s ability. And here are 5 reasons to prove it.
5) Yoriichi is the creator of the Breath of the Sun
Not only is the strongest Swordsman, Yoriichi also invented the first breathing technique – Breath of the Sun. Later, what Tanjiro showed was simply copying/learning from Yoriichi’s technique.
Obviously, no one can understand and master it better than the creator himself. Therefore, Yoriichi is the only one who can easily apply this technique and maximize his strength while Tanjiro is not.
4) Yoriichi almost defeated Muzan
Yoriichi is the only one who can injure Muzan and almost kill him. What’s impressive is that Yoriichi’s single hit was enough to make Muzan wobble or even close to losing his life under that blow.
If the two sides fought seriously, Muzan would surely be dead. On the other hand, Tanjiro struggles to hit Muzan, let alone injure him in the final battle.
3) Yoriichi moves faster than Muzan’s reaction
Kibutsuji Muzan’s mistake was to have underestimated Yoriichi because of his face and expression. The Demon King once said that Yoriichi looked simple and ordinary. However, during the battle, Yoriichi’s ability to move ‘speedy’ made Muzan broken and unable to dodge despite having very fast reflexes.
In contrast, Tanjiro could never move as fast as the ‘father’ of the Breath of the Sun.
2) Tanjiro can’t defeat the High Xuan
As the one who made the Demon King ‘bleed’, Yoriichi was able to defeat the Twelve Demon Moons. He fought with Shang Xuanyi Kokushibo, who happened to be his twin brother. Although Yoriichi did not defeat him, in that battle, if not for his old age and weakness, Yoichiro could have finished Kokushibou with the first blow.
Meanwhile, Tanjiro struggled and had a hard time confronting Thuong Huyen Ngu in the Blacksmith’s Village arc.

1) Tanjiro’s technique is not perfect
As mentioned above, Yoriichi is the creator of the Breath of the Sun. This means that everything related to this technique is something Yoriichi is particularly knowledgeable about.
On the other hand, Tanjiro learned this technique as a prayer dance rather than a breathing pattern. Over the generations, this technique may have changed so Tanjiro is unlikely to be able to use it as methodically and ‘skilled’ as Yoriichi used to be. In addition, despite having the same breathing pattern, Tanjiro’s power when used is not equal to his senior.
