In Komi Can’t Communicate episode 4, Komi’s journey is troubled with the introduction of several “friends”: Makeru Yadano and Ren Yamai.
Kodoani.com – In the first three episodes, Komi Can’t Communicate focused on Komi overcoming her social anxiety and especially her communication barrier. Her journey so far has been to connect with her classmates and build friendships as a step forward. Since Episode 3, Komi has befriended three friends: Hitohito Tadano, Najimi Osana, and Himiko Agari. Volume 4, however, is another landmark in the series with an introduction by Makeu Yadano and Ren Yamai.
Both Ren and Makeu are bad friends in very different ways. Makeru is extremely competitive and hates to lose to anyone in any aspect of life. It doesn’t matter to her – perfect body, perfect eyesight, perfect score in a gram – the only thing that matters to Makeu is that she beats everyone else in every category.
This drive to win is what sets Makeru up against Komi: she’s the most popular girl in school due to her good looks and has even been named the “god” of her class by both teachers and students. So, Komi is Makeu’s biggest threat to becoming #1, that’s why she obsess about beating her in a required physical exam at school.
The other new character, Ren Yamai, is a different genre. At the beginning of episode 4, she falls in love with Komi, but is far from falling in love with a healthy schoolgirl. The more episode lengths devoted to Ren, the more terrifyingly clear it becomes that her crush is actually an unhealthy – and deadly – obsession. More than anything, Ren’s behavior throughout the episode suggests she’s a yandere.
Like most of her classmates, Ren also falls in love with Komi because of her beauty. Whenever Komi walked across the hall or even just sat at her desk, she made it very clear that she was interested. The moment Ren finds out Komi’s friends with Tadano and Himiko – students she considers failures – she becomes terrifyingly sad and decides to do something about the problem. this. The plan she made was to “eliminate” her competitors so she could have her own Komi.
The first person Ren targets is Tadano, who is kidnapped by her on the way to school and kept in her bedroom. While bound and gagged to a chair, Tadano is horrified by the extent of Ren’s obsession when he sees the walls of her room plastered with pictures of Komi. It didn’t take long for the guy to realize that Ren’s intentions were not good.
At Itan Private High School, Najimi and Komi notice Tadano’s absence when they realize he hasn’t been to class before lunch. They immediately became suspicious of his whereabouts when they began to notice Ren sitting at Tadano’s table next to Komi. Since Najimi only knows about everyone at the school, it makes sense that they know about Ren’s history and especially her yandere behavior.
To confirm their suspicion that Ren was somehow involved in Tadano’s absence, Najimi requests to go to her house and invites Komi to come along. Fully aware of Ren’s obsession, Najimi knew she wouldn’t turn down a visit from Komi. This will make it easier for Najimi to get into Ren’s bedroom that they wouldn’t have otherwise. When Komi and Najimi arrive, they will get more than they can bargain for.
Ren, not wanting to spoil her chances with Komi, she goes into her bedroom in front of visiting guests to hide Tadano in her closet, threatening to kill him if he makes a sound. But she also threatened to kill him even if he didn’t. When Komi and Najimi arrive at Ren’s bedroom, Najimi takes advantage of Ren making tea to check her cupboard, where their suspicions are immediately confirmed.
When Ren returns to her room and finds her secret discovered, she disrupts and threatens to harm both Najimi and Tadano so she can finally enjoy a true friendship with Komi. However, Komi simply writes in the notebook that she chooses her own friends, making it clear to Ren that she cannot name her relationships. This leaves Ren broken, but it won’t be the last time Komi sees her.
Unfortunately, Komi’s experience with Ren leads her to believe that she is a danger to her friends and should cut ties with them for their safety. Tadano, echoing Komi’s previous confrontation with Ren, disagrees. He is friends with his like-minded Komi. When Ren returns to apologize for his behavior, Komi agrees to be friends with her if she stops threatening the friends she already has.
