Squid Game is a South Korean television series written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The film stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung. The movie is released online by Netflix on September 17, 2021
The film is about a group of 456 people who risk their lives in 6 survival games to receive a total of 45.6 billion Won. The name of the movie is taken from a Korean folk game in the past. Hwang Dong-hyuk conceived this idea based on his own financial difficulties as a child, as well as the class disparity in Korea. Although he originally wrote in 2009, he couldn’t find a production company to finance the film until Netflix did around 2019 as part of their efforts to expand their service overseas. .
The film received critical acclaim and international attention. Attracting more than 142 million household members in its first 4 weeks of release, it is Netflix’s most watched series to date and overtakes Bridgerton as the most watched series with over 1, 65 billion hours in the first 28 days. The show is scheduled to shoot in the UK in the near future.
