Lin is expected to rewrite the script with Rosenberg and Pinkner.
One-Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch but tries to find a worthy opponent after getting bored with the lack of challenge in the fight against him. evil. Originally published as a webcomic in 2009 by artist ONE, One-Punch Man was later published in Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump Next after going viral. Total worldwide sales for One-Punch Man are over 30 million copies and since then the series has been translated into many languages. A critically-acclaimed television anime series based on the manga premiered in 2015, with an English dub coming next year.
A live-action film adaptation of One-Punch Man was originally announced by Sony in April 2020 after the studio acquired the film rights from Shueisha. The project received no major development until Lin started the project as a director less than two months after he left Fast X, the tenth installment in the long-running Fast Saga. Although Universal initially claimed Lin, who directed five of the nine Fast and Furious films, left behind creative differences, many industry insiders and sources close to Fast X’s production revealed that that Lin left because he couldn’t handle the behavior of star Vin Diesel as the star and producer on the film. The Incredible Hulk’s Louis Leterrier signed on to replace Lin as director in May.
Lin will produce One-Punch Man along with Avi Arad and Ari Arad of Arad Productions, who are known for their work in several Marvel films including the Spider-Man series. Sony is confident that One-Punch Man could be the start of a new franchise for the studio and hopes production can begin an adaptation later this year.
