Veteran animator Hitomi Tateno of Studio Ghibli is animator for the project
Kodoani.com – Akita Shoten announced on Tuesday that the manga Cocoon by Machiko Kyō is adapting an anime that will air on NHK in the summer of 2025. Hitomi Tateno, a veteran animator at Studio Ghibli, is an animation producer, with studio Sasayuri producing the anime. The announcement does not reveal the format for the anime.
The manga is set on a tropical southern island, and revolves around San and her best friend Mayu, who attend the island’s top girls’ school. War soon comes to their country, and the school’s students are soon embroiled in the war effort, and soon the rear is taking care of the wounded. One by one, San and Mayu lose their friends in the growing war.
Kyō released the manga in 2010, 65 years after the end of World War II. The anime’s 2025 release takes place 80 years after the end of World War II.
