Insomniac Games’ creative director says the team has scrapped a ‘Venomized’ version of a Spider-Man 2 villain.
Venom is one of the most famous characters in the Spider-Man comic book universe, and he also plays an important role in the new Spider-Man 2 game.
According to Insomniac Games senior creative director Bryan Intihar, the “Venomized” version of one of the villains in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was reviewed and cut. One of Spider-Man’s most infamous enemies that every gamer is familiar with, The Sandman or Sandman, played an important role in the early game of Spider-Man 2. According to Intihar, he almost may have a much larger role, returning after being Venomized. That version of Sandman never made it past Spider-Man 2’s concept art, but Intihar says there’s always a chance it could be revisited.
Venom is one of the most famous characters in the Spider-Man comic book universe, and he also plays an important role in the new Spider-Man 2 game. Venom is a sentient alien creature that survives by bonding with its host. In the comics, Venom’s hosts include Eddie Brock, Flash Thompson, and even Peter Parker himself. In Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games only used Venom, but the truth is that Venom can bond with different hosts and give them unique powers.
Speaking on IGN’s Beyond podcast, Bryan Intihar shared some secrets during the development of Spider-Man 2. One of the most interesting details Intihar shared was that Insomniac Games had plans for the Venom concept turned Sandman. While Intihar doesn’t explain exactly what that means, it’s implied that Sandman will bond with Venom or that Venom will use his powers to take over Sandman while remaining bonded to someone else. Either way, it will probably result in a Sandman with a black suit, big sharp teeth, and other interesting powers.
Speaking on IGN’s Beyond podcast, Bryan Intihar shared some secrets from the development of Spider-Man 2.
According to Intihar, the idea of Venom turning Sandman was unfortunately abandoned. There are several reasons for this decision. First, Intihar said that creating Sandman properly was difficult enough. Second, the time and resources required to implement this idea are too high. Venom as Sandman exists as concept art and ideas, nothing more.
Intihar said that Insomniac Games may decide to revisit the idea of a Venom-infected Sandman in the future. He said that this artistic idea is “really cool” and “maybe one day it will be possible.” Venom is now a part of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man universe, and there are some exciting opportunities the team could explore in a sequel.
In the Spider-Man comics, Venom has played both villain, anti-hero and all-around hero over the years. He’s also an important step in introducing Carnage, not to mention other symbiote characters like Toxin and Knull. Venom turning Sandman might be an interesting idea, but Insomniac Games may have bigger ideas to tackle in the future. While the idea was scrapped, it’s interesting to consider what the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could have been like with the inclusion of Venom Sandman and other potential Venom hosts.
