The Chinese mobile game Metal Slug: Awakening is being localized and ported to the PlayStation for release later this year.
Metal Slug: Awakening is coming to PS4, PS5, iOS, and Android.
The existence of the Metal Slug series has come as a surprise to many. That’s not because Metal Slug is made up of bad or unpopular games, but on the contrary, it seems more appropriate for a different era of gaming. However, Metal Slug was as successful as expected. The latest example is Metal Slug, a spin-off developed by Chinese team TiMi Studios and published on mobile devices by Tencent. Now Tencent is even gearing up to release Metal Slug: Awakening worldwide on PlayStation’s storefront.
In a statement released on the official Metal Slug: Awakening Twitter account, Tencent announced that the game will be officially coming to the PlayStation. Support for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, Tencent doesn’t have any more information to share on the matter. There’s no confirmation on Metal Slug: Awakening’s release date, whether the game will launch in China before being released in the West or elsewhere.
For now, Metal Slug remains exclusive to China through iOS and Android devices. A release date for the mobile version of the game in the West has yet to be announced. However, there is much to share on that topic. A beta test was held in January that was described as so popular it crashed the game’s servers twice. Then, just yesterday, it was confirmed that the iOS and Android releases of Metal Slug: Awakening in the West will be “very soon.”
The announcement of the release on PS4 and PS5 this year comes from Tencent.
This means Metal Slug fans will be in for some good news soon. Continuing the announcement, first confirming a mobile release “very soon”, then support for PS4 and PS5 shortly after, hinting that the release of Metal Slug: Awakening is not far off. It will be interesting to see how TiMi designs Metal Slug: Awakening, which builds on the touch screen of mobile devices then port to console. Metal Slug: Awakening could very easily look and feel like any other traditional Metal Slug game, which is probably exactly what fans of the franchise wanted to see.
What Metal Slug: Awakening’s announcement really does for fans is revive hopes that the franchise is seeing a revival these days. Metal Slug is being released on PS4 and PS5, as well as the scheduled release of Metal Slug: Tactics in 2022, promising more exciting content to enjoy in the future. We are still waiting to hear more information in the coming weeks.
