{kodoani.com} In Mieruko-chan episode 2, Miko’s ability to see ghosts is turning her world upside down. But it comes in handy when she and Hanna find a stray cat.
In Volume 2 of Mieruko-chan , Miko’s living nightmare continues as the soft-spoken girl is always hunted by her ability to see ghosts. You can’t help but feel sorry for the other medium, although her unusually well-founded response to each encounter makes for some great comedy. So far, the story has shown the flip side of Miko’s abilities, but Episode 2 shows at least one benefit that her newfound powers offer.
School itself was hard enough, but Miko’s ability to see the dead made it a terrifying place. Now the building seems to be a popular haunt for many types of spirits, and Miko encounters many spirits throughout her day. Whether it’s in the classroom, hallway, or locker room, there’s no shortage of creepy creatures lurking around.
For the most part, Miko was able to stay calm during these encounters. It was an impressive achievement, but even she couldn’t keep her straight face for long. The spirits she sees are terrifying, and while Mieruko-chan is funnier than scary, the design of the ghosts is still a hit to this day. Every new spirit brings an unpleasant feeling, and you can tell that Miko has trouble ignoring some of the more grotesque spirits.
After an eventful day at school, Miko and Hanna come across a stray kitten. While Hanna is busy taking care of the kitten, Miko notices another ghost – this ghost seems to be very attached to the abandoned cat. The two set out to find a new home for the cat and were quickly approached by two men.
The first of the two has various scars on his face, a blank look, and not at all endearing when approaching the two girls. He’s not the ideal candidate and doesn’t really give Hanna or Miko much confidence. The second man was young, handsome, and seemed the better choice. Hanna was about to give the kitten to him, but Miko sensed something was wrong and saw many cat spirits around him. Like the other ghosts Miko had seen up to this point, they were grotesque and had a terrifying aura. Realizing he doesn’t look like her, Miko firmly asks Hanna not to give the kitten to him.
The scarred man is also surrounded by cat spirits, but unlike the handsome man, these spirits have an almost angelic appearance and look over him as endearing. Miko believes that despite his appearance, the first man will become the best adoptive parent for the abandoned cat.
Most of the ghosts seen in Mieruko-chan are a combination of bodily horror. The appearance of two cat spirits – along with the scarred man’s wife at the end of Episode 2 – confirms that Miko has just had bad luck and encountered some less-than-expected ghosts in the world. Although it turned her life into a survival nightmare, Miko’s ability to see the dead has proven to be useful in a limited capacity. Mieruko-chan will certainly continue to show her reserved reaction to the horrifying scenes in front of her, but there’s a good chance more than just comedy will be included in the story in the future.
