Xbox has announced the latest Minecraft spin-off game called Minecraft Legends, a strategy game where players lead an army.
Mojang is working with Blackbird Interactive to create Minecraft Legends.
Minecraft is one of the biggest franchises that Xbox controls. It’s no surprise that Minecraft has expanded significantly in recent years, with projects including Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Story Mode, and Minecraft Dungeons. During the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase event, the latest Minecraft spin-off title was announced called Minecraft Legends. To the surprise of many, Minecraft Legends is an action strategy game where players take back the Overworld by building their own army.
The announcement trailer for Minecraft Legends raised the threat of an organized army of pigs seeking to wreak havoc on Minecraft’s Overworld. Players will need to form their own army by creating new allies and then leading them into battle against the pigs of Minecraft. These battles will take place across the entire Overworld, full of diverse populations, rich resources, and all forms of life.
Mojang is working with Blackbird Interactive to create Minecraft Legends. Blackbird Interactive is a name that is no stranger to Minecraft, having worked with Mojang on Minecraft Earth before. Blackbird Interactive is also currently developing major strategy games like Homeworld 3 and Crossfire: Legion, which makes the studio’s involvement in Minecraft Legends quite promising.
While Minecraft Legends certainly won’t have as much depth as Homeworld 3, this partnership will give us an idea of the direction Mojang and Blackbird Interactive are headed. It is possible that the combat elements of Minecraft Dungeon will be combined with real-time strategy game elements. Short gameplay footage in the trailer also shows the player commanding his troops to move to specific locations or attack certain structures.
However, combat will not be the only focus of Minecraft Legends. Mojang also ensures the presence of some build and destroy gameplay mechanics. It looks like players won’t be building anything by hand like Minecraft, but will instead be building buildings like other real-time strategy titles like Empire. Additional gameplay details will no doubt be shared in the coming months. Like every first-party Xbox game currently in development, Minecraft Legends is confirmed to be free day one for Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
