Minecraft in 2023 looks a lot different than it did in the early 2010s, and an interesting video clip highlights the fact that it’s a bit more creepy than it is today. The open-world sandbox adventure is still very popular and has come a long way over the past 2 decades; In fact, it’s one of the most popular games in the world, so it’s no surprise that Minecraft is still being updated. Just recently the game was rated for Xbox Series consoles, there is currently no original version of the game, so a next-gen release could be imminent.
While Minecraft’s core mechanics haven’t changed significantly over the years, the game is almost visually unrecognizable compared to early beta releases. Players still have to build bases to protect themselves from the seemingly increasing number of enemies that appear at night, gather resources, and craft items. Minecraft gameplay recipe is a formula commonly used as blueprint for other survival sandbox games. Creative mode, on the other hand, gives players access to unlimited gear bags of all items, allowing them to build some truly extraordinary constructions.
An online user shared a clip playing the game “Better Than Adventure!” is a mod that acts as a “fork” of the beta version 1.7.3 of Minecraft. In the short gameplay clip, in the video the player is inside a random wooden shelter at the beginning of the game with only a furnace, crafting table, and a single torch. When the character breaks some wooden blocks and steps out of the shelter, a Creeper suddenly falls and explodes, which seems to take the player by surprise, as evidenced by the subsequent movements.
Although Minecraft does not require a powerful PC to play these days, the classic visual style of “Better Than Adventure!” maintains the aesthetic that the game had when it was still in beta with shorter rendering distances and dim lighting. Old-fashioned Creepers are completely silent until they start to explode, and this nostalgic clip will remind older Minecraft players of a time when they were often the source of jump scares.
There are other scary Minecraft mods but “Better Than Adventure!” especially interesting because it uses an older version of the game and goes in a slightly different direction when compared to modern, official Minecraft. One might be inclined to describe it as a Minecraft from an alternate universe.
