The latest trailer for the free-to-play action title MultiVersus brings out its respective monetization and development systems.
MultiVersus is now live, with Early Access available to anyone willing to watch 60 minutes of a Twitch stream to earn codes. The excitement around the fighting game continues to build, but many potential MultiVersus players are still unclear about how the monetization system and the progression of this free-to-play title work. With that in mind, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Interactive released a short trailer showcasing MultiVersus’ currencies, character unlocks, skins, and other rewards.
In MultiVersus there are two main currencies. Gold can only be earned in-game by playing, mostly through completing matches and winning, while Gleamium is a current currency with no other way to earn. Both can be used to purchase different types of items, although gold unlockable items are rare (and expensive) while most others are Gleamium restricted for the time being. All unlocks are directly at a specific gold or Gleamium price, so players shouldn’t expect any randomness or loot boxes.
There are various development systems available in MultiVersus as soon as the player logs in. This system starts with the player’s own Career level, with experience earned per match and a reward of 100 Simple Gold per level. Next are the individual character levels. Each character has 15 levels with each level unlocking a reward, whether it’s gold, an always-important perk, or certain types of items. After reaching a certain level, the character perks in MultiVersus can also be improved with gold. Progress has a direct effect on strength.
MultiVersus’ seasonal Battle Pass grants rewards as players complete challenges and earn experience. There’s a free and a premium version, each offering rewards and useful items. Note that the deluxe offers an XP boost for character progression, which can be seen as affecting gameplay due to perks. However, you can’t get these directly, and character experience is earned relatively simply and quickly through normal play anyway.
Perhaps the most important system in MultiVersus and the most controversial is its character unlocking system. Characters can be unlocked in MultiVersus in one of two ways. The first is by purchasing Founder’s packages, which may include a Character Ticket. The second is with gold, currently priced between 1,500 and 3,000. Gold requires quite a bit of work to earn, so players should make sure they only pick characters to unlock after they’re sure.
Finally, MultiVersus offers a unique combination of progression and reward systems, including both free content and premium options. Developments can absolutely affect gameplay but also reward players for their time investment. Whether this balances out into an enjoyable experience will take some time to realize, especially since new content is always being added to MultiVersus. However, it certainly provides a solid foundation for MultiVersus to prove itself as a great free-to-play title.
