Kodoani.com – On August 7, Korean singer Jeon Somi released the mini album “Game Play”, along with the MV for the title song “Fast Forward” on the YouTube channel of management company The Black Label.
Immediately after its release, the MV reached #1 on YouTube’s global trending chart and was the most viewed MV on YouTube in the first 24 hours since its release. You can watch this MV here:
However, viewers quickly discovered that Jeon Somi had “stealed” the image from the Urusei Yatsura manga, and it was the Korean audience who discovered this.
Urusei Yatsura seems to be quite popular in Korea, as Korean audiences quickly realized that the character created in the MV was derived from one of the images of Lum, the female protagonist in Urusei Yatsura.
After that, the audience began to criticize Lum’s unauthorized use of art from Urusei Yatsura in the MV, and the video was altered to remove Lum’s image. Jeon Somi’s agency, THEBLACKLABEL, has released an official apology statement over the image plagiarism allegations.
“We looked into the matter as soon as we noticed criticism that the graphics in Fast Forward resembled a cartoon character,” they said.
“We have decided to delete and change the scenes in question. We will replace them as soon as possible and take all necessary measures,” they continued. “We sincerely apologize for not being more careful in our work and promise to work more carefully to avoid making the same mistake in the future.”
