My Dress-Up Darling follows Wakana Gojo, a reclusive first-year high school student ashamed of her passion and craft of Hina dolls. Wakana’s embarrassing secret is discovered by Marin Kitagawa, a beautiful and sociable 16-year-old student. Instead of mocking him, Marin asked Wakana to help design the anime cosplay costume. An unexpected partnership leads to Wakana and Marin embracing their hidden passions, as well as strengthening their skills and relationships with each other. The My Dress-Up Darling anime is based on a manga by Shinichi Fukuda, published by Square Enix Manga & Books.
Embrace My Dress-Up Darling fans
Since its release, My Dress-Up Darling has been praised for celebrating the cosplay community, as well as challenging gender norms through Wakana’s love of Hina dolls. Marin herself became a breakout character, inspiring many other cosplayers to recreate her stunning outfits throughout the show. Keisuke Shinohara, the anime director behind My Dress-Up Darling, believes that the reason Marin resonates so strongly with viewers is because of her pervasive passion and respect for herself and others.
Shinohara says, “Marin isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but when it comes to romance, she can be shy, and that’s understandable to anyone in love. “The gap between her appearance and what’s going on inside makes her lovable. Combined with the fact that she can become dedicated to something when she puts her mind to it, she has the ideal qualities we look for in a person.”
My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 was announced on September 22, 2022 and is scheduled for release in 2024.
