In episode 4, Yume is glad that Mizuto finally asked her out on a date. However, not everything is as it appears.

In episode 4 of My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex, Mizuto takes Yume on a date to their local aquarium as punishment for the underwear incident in episode 3. While Yume is delighted to be spending more time with her stepbrother, it appears a something is a bit off power. Mizuto’s usual sarcastic tone was gone and he acted more like a gentleman than ever. While he may simply be showing affection for his ex, there could be something else going on behind the scenes.
Little does Yume know that this date is part of Kawanami Kogure’s devious plan to shatter Minami Akatsuki’s delusional dream of marrying Mizuto so she can become Yume’s little sister. To do this, the two boys plan to prove that Yume only has eyes for Mizuto. However, the question remains: does Mizuto really love Yume, or is he just using her to achieve his own personal goals?
Kogure’s crooked plan
In episode 3 of My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex Minami sets up her websites on Mizuto and asks him to marry her. Although Mizuto declines her offer, she persists and begins to follow him everywhere he goes. From eating next to him at a fast food restaurant to breaking into and entering his house, Minami was in complete stalking mode and didn’t bother to respond. What’s still strange is that her real goal isn’t to get close to Mizuto – it’s to fulfill her illusions of taking care of Yume and becoming her little sister.
After calling Kawanami for advice, Mizuto learns that Minami doesn’t stop working when she sets her sights on something and can only stop if she believes there is no viable path ahead. As a result, Kawanami devised a plan to make sure Minami learned her lesson and realized that Yume had no interest in any kind of relationship, romantic or otherwise.
Does Mizuto still have feelings for Yume?
If before Episode 4 it wasn’t clear that Yume still had feelings for her ex-boyfriend, it’s certainly clear by now. Yume is infatuated with Mizuto during their date and becomes overwhelmed with almost every action of the guy. Whether it was his dashing looks or when Mizuto took her hand, Yume was overwhelmed by emotions. While she was still skeptical about Mizuto’s approach, she couldn’t help but feel that she was finally getting the attention she deserved.
However, Mizuto doesn’t really come to the day to please Yume or fulfill any wishes he might have to be with her. Instead, the trip to the aquarium is simply a way for him to get rid of one problem – Minami. By using Yume as a form of bait and not being honest with her about her true intentions, some might conclude that Mizuto doesn’t have any romantic interest in her step-sister. .
From what My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex has shown so far, Mizuto is a very intelligent character who understands people’s feelings and motives very well. This discerning attitude makes it possible for him to take advantage of certain situations and easily manipulate those around him for his benefit. This could be one reason why his relationship with Yume eventually fell apart, if Mizuto was more concerned with what could be gained from her than having a balanced love relationship.
While saying this, Mizuto showed concern for her step-sister. Later in episode 4, it is revealed that the reason he didn’t inform Yume of Minami’s infatuation with her was that he didn’t want their relationship to be ruined. Instead, Mizuto managed to resolve the situation and minimize the damage to both Yume and Minami.
When Mizuto and Yume return home from their date at the aquarium, they finally solve the underwear problem. Yume was able to execute Mizuto’s punishment by making him take pictures and letting him hug her and whisper in her ear. At this point, it’s more obvious that Mizuto still has some feelings for her newly married step sister after saying “I caught you.”
With Minami behind her, Mizuto may have more time to spend with Yume in an attempt to mend their relationship. The two are becoming more and more open about their feelings for each other, and it seems it’s only a matter of time before they’re officially together again. However, if this happens, it’s unlikely that things will go well, as their parents will no doubt have a question or two about how this can happen.
