Months after leaving Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Toshihiro Nagoshi’s Yakuza and Monkey Ball studios will operate under the Chinese company NetEase.
Nagoshi Studio is a brand new start for Nagoshi and the group of former Sega developers who have collaborated on Yakuza and many other games during the more than 30 years of working at Sega. This includes series producer Daisuke Sato, who announced his departure from Ryu Ga Gotoku at the same time as Nagoshi.
The studio’s official website confirms that it will be operating out of Tokyo, with Nagoshi serving as President and Representative Director while the team works to develop high-end titles for multiple platforms.
As expected, Nagoshi Studio is supported in many ways by NetEase, as well as having 100% control of the studio, although there is likely to be very little outside interference when the new team embarks on future projects. future.
Nagoshi confirmed that he left Sega because he wanted to try something different without the limitations that come with working under a larger company in the gaming space.
He wants his next project, currently being worked on at this new studio, to follow his own methodology and creative freedom, which NetEase agreed to when negotiating and facilitating.
When talking about the development process, Nagoshi mentions his experience working with Nintendo in the past and has always admired the company’s position to only release games when they are ready and of proud quality, that is. which Nagoshi Studio will also follow.
“I admire that stance, and want to keep that policy in place until those ideals become reality,” Nagoshi said. “If you’ve never made a game before, you might think this is a given. But if someone inside will have a fuller view.”
As for the first game from Nagoshi Studio, there is currently no release timeframe, but Nagoshi has said that his team understands Japan better than anywhere else in the world, and the product will hit the mood, tastes of cherry blossom players.
