Netflix India has dismissed the anime adaptation of Shinya Umemura , Ajichika , and Takumi Fukui ‘s manga as Record of Ragnarok (Shuumatsu no Valkyrie. The streaming platform has listed the anime will release in India on June 17 along with worldwide debut.
Netflix has not made a public statement about the removal. ANN has reached out to Netflix for comment on the removal, but the company has not responded at press time.
US Hindu activist Rajan Zed released a statement on March 21 calling on Warner Bros. Japan “does not trivialize” the Hindu god Lord Shiva in the anime. According to Zed, in early June Netflix refused to remove anime from its catalog, in an email to him stating that “Netflix respects all religions, communities and their cultures and traditions. Stories on Netflix’s service are not intended to disrespect or hurt the feelings of any community or group.” The anime is currently streaming on Netflix in the United States.
Zed previously spoke to publishers of the Coamix manga and urged the company “not to trivialize Lord Shiva and other highly revered Hindu gods and goddesses in its manga publications.”
The manga launched in Comic Zenon in May 2017. Umemura is writing the stories, while Ajichika is drawing the art. Fukui is credited for composing. The manga depicts a character based on the Hindu god God Shiva as well as characters based on other characters from Hindu mythology, Greek mythology, the Bible, and Japanese history. Viz Media will begin publishing the manga in English this fall.
