The Wii and DSi stores have reopened, allowing gamers to access them again after Nintendo shut down the service without warning.

Following the announcement of the closing of the 3DS and Wii U stores, Nintendo also closed the Wii and DSi stores without warning.

With the release and production of new Nintendo consoles and the new games being played on them, there are many old and nostalgic consoles that are slowly becoming obsolete. However, that doesn’t always mean that gamers still don’t continue to use their old Nintendo consoles and the games they love on them.

Following the announcement of the closing of the 3DS and Wii U stores, Nintendo also closed the Wii and DSi stores without warning. Nintendo has since issued a comment saying it was due to store maintenance. Finally, Nintendo recently reopened access to the Wii and DSi stores to players, but didn’t make it clear how long they would be open.

YouTube channel GameXplain posted a video that dives into the details surrounding Nintendo Wii and DSi stores becoming accessible again. The video mentions that while the stores are open and can be accessed on Wii and DSi consoles, purchases cannot be made in both stores because that feature has been discontinued for years now. Either way, at least gamers will still be able to access the store to download any purchases they’ve made while the store is still fully operational.

It’s understandable to see Nintendo putting its primary focus on the Switch and leaving the older consoles behind. It makes sense to move forward instead of staying in the past, but not all of us gamers are ready to let the old but great things pass. Many gamers still own a 3DS, DSi, Wii, or Wii U despite the introduction and release of the Switch into Nintendo’s console library.

The decision to keep the Wii and DSi stores open to download previously purchased content is a nice gesture from Nintendo to fans. Nintendo’s best games, as well as the company’s consoles, tend to be almost timeless. Gamers will want to experience the classic NES days when they weren’t born, or relive their childhood with a DS game on their old handheld. Although new and more innovative things are always on the market, retro things are still loved by many fans.
