Chapter 1095 provided new hints about what happened during the God Valley disaster. It also shows that more details will be revealed soon.
Chapter 1095 reveals that the Death Valley disaster involved the Celestial Dragons hunting the locals and slaves for sport, with the intention of taking over the island and its resources.
Kuma, one of the future Seven Warlords of the Sea, was a slave participating in the Death Valley Native Hunt and nearly died in crossfire when the Rocks attacked the Celestial Dragons.
The chapter also suggests that Monkey D. Dragon, leader of the Revolutionary Army, may have participated in the disaster and met Emporio Ivankov and his sister, Ginny, during this time. This added a layer of mystery and intrigue to the events that occurred.
What do fans know about God Valley?
Death Valley is best mentioned in Chapter 957, “The Extreme”. 38 years ago, Vice Admiral Garp and the Marines fought the Rocks Pirates led by Rocks D. Xebec. Roger’s pirate crew has allied with the Navy to defeat this ambitious pirate seeking to take over the world. Since Roger’s crew’s involvement was hidden, Garp took responsibility for defeating Xebec and became a hero to the Marines.
After the Death Valley disaster, the island was erased from the map without leaving a trace. Fans concluded that the island was destroyed by a secret ancient weapon used by the world government. This would be consistent with what they did to Lulusia in Chapter 1060, “Luffy’s Dream”.
The World Government likely wants to erase all traces of Xebec, which is also why almost no one in the modern era knows his name. Garp does not like talking about the God Valley disaster because it involves protecting the Heavenly Dragons and cooperating with Gold Roger.
He didn’t like being responsible to them, which was why he had avoided promotion to Admiral. Regardless, Xebec’s plan threatened them, so he needed to become their Hero. St. Figarland Garling also claims to be the “champion” (王者, oja) of Death Valley. This was initially mistranslated as “leader” in Chapter 1086, “The Five Elder Stars”, leading to many misunderstandings among American fans.

Additionally, Red-Haired Shanks was found as a baby in a treasure chest collected by Roger’s crew in the same location. Between this and the resemblance between young Garling and the Yonko, fans have concluded that these two are father and son.
Another strange thing about this day is the participation of Big Mom and Kaido. Big Mom reminded the Beast King that she gave him her Devil Fruit on the same day Rocks collapsed in Chapter 999, “The sake I brewed to drink with you”. It’s unclear where she got the fruit or whether it was related to the Catastrophe, but the fact that it occurred on the same day makes it likely.
What does Chapter 1095 confirm about Death Valley?
Chapter 1095 reveals that the Heavenly Dragon Man came to the island to hunt down the locals and some slaves for entertainment. Once the locals are destroyed, they can claim the island and its resources in the name of the World Government. Kuma was one of the slaves who participated in this native hunting contest. The future That Vu Hai must have narrowly avoided the crossfire and escaped with his life.
A notable scene involves Kuma attempting to escape, …but the other slaves recapture him on their master’s behalf. They knew that they would be responsible for Kuma and killed if they let him escape. This scene was shown before Bonney looked into her father’s memories in Chapter 1074, “MK. III”.
This disaster is also where Kuma meets Emporio Ivankov and his sister, Ginny. The two boys would eventually become members of the Revolutionary Army under the leadership of Monkey D. Dragon. This encounter could mean that Dragon was also involved in the Death Valley disaster in some way, which would be another reason to hide it.
What could have happened in God Valley?
What is currently known about Death Valley can be used to determine how the Catastrophe unfolded. It may have started near the end of the Thien Long Nhan’s native hunting contest. By that point, Garling will already have an undeniable advantage (after overcoming a ten thousand point deficit), and the last few survivors will be Kuma and Ivankov. Kuma surviving to this point with Garling on the hunt would show the extent of the impact of Ivankov’s words from the end of Chapter 1095. The Rocks could have invaded the island before the Sky Dragons could complete their hunt. Surname.
The ensuing chaos would allow Kuma and Ivankov (and possibly Ginny) to escape the island without being forced back into the hands of their captors. The Chapter 1095 flashback will likely end at this point (it’s too early to reveal all), but many speculations can be made from what is known. The Navy could quickly intervene if they weren’t defending the island from invaders. Even if they were doing the previous thing, the Rocks gang could have broken through their defenses to carry out their plan. At this time, Garp will intervene to have the opportunity to attack the ice.
A young Dragon (who would be around 17 years old at this point) could also have been in Death Valley as a member of the Marines. He may have been the one who helped slaves like Kuma and Ivankov escape instead of gathering them to the noble world like he was supposed to do. It will be a fateful meeting and will have huge consequences.
This individual act would be the first of many signs of his dissatisfaction with the current system of government, which would eventually be attributed to the rift between him and his father, Garp. After the war, pirates from the two surviving Roger and Rocks pirates may have taken whatever treasure remained on the island while they had the chance.
Gold’s Roger Gang may have found Shanks hastily left behind by the Celestial Dragons. Charlotte Linlin may similarly have carried the remaining Blue Dragon devil fruit in one of the chests. Kuma and Ivankov may even have brought their future Devil Fruits with them. Whatever happened in God Valley, Kuma’s role may have been the least. As a young slave, the most he could do in a battle between pirates and the strongest navy was live to tell the tale.
This also makes it difficult for him to see Xebec, or any other main combatant for that matter. The events of the battle and its aftermath may have to be mentioned again. However, with a little luck, Oda may be willing to provide more details than audiences expect.
