Will the sudden return of a character in One Piece really happen – and if so, how will it affect the outcome of the battle for Wano?
Kodoani.com – In the most recent chapter of One Piece, a character has unexpectedly returned. Unseen since before the raid, Kozuki Hiyori – dressed in a Komurasaki outfit – appears to have reached Onigashima Island at some point during the raid without anyone noticing. Even more surprising, the only person she chose to reveal her presence was none other than Kurozumi Orochi.

Since the beginning of Wano, Hiyori has played a central role in the opening of the arc’s story. After surviving Orochi’s attempt to kill her and the rest of the Kozuki family thanks to Kawamatsu’s efforts, she was later taken in by a man named Kyoshiro, secretly disguised as Denjiro. While under Denjiro’s care, she became a spy acting as a companion for Orochi named Komurasaki and quickly became his favorite. “Komurasaki” was later killed by “Kyoshiro” to save her from Orochi’s clutches, allowing her to escape from him.
Since then, Hiyori has aided the rebel forces against Orochi and Kaido, most notably providing Roronoa Zoro with the Enma sword to replace Shisui. So far, this seemingly small act has given the rebel alliance a huge advantage over Kaido, as Zoro did the impossible and scarred Kaido in a fierce battle. In this sense, her role is significant, but also rather minor and indirect – at least until the most recent chapter.
Appearing unexpectedly as Komurasaki once again, Hiyori somehow managed to reach the island, specifically where Orochi was hiding, although her purpose is unclear. However, it can be reasonably determined that she is the mysterious individual who helped the hero group.
Unfortunately, why she came to Orochi or even how she got to the island to begin with are still complete mysteries. Given what readers and followers have seen, it’s clear that if this character is really Hiyori, it’s all a plot by her to try to trick Orochi. Even with that said, it was quite a surprise to see Hiyori there, especially since she refused to see her brother until the raid was over.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this girl may not actually be Hiyori, but her mother Toki. In One Piece, it’s not uncommon for characters to look a lot like their parents or ancestors. As seen in the flashback, both Toki and Hiyori look surprisingly similar, with very little difference between the two. The only visual difference between them that can be discerned from the black and white manga is that Toki has a scar on his leg. This may just be a coincidence, but the image reveals Komurasaki wasn’t drawn in a way that allows the reader to clearly see her legs.
With her unique Devil Fruit, it’s also possible that Toki traveled to the future just before she died to be on Wano to fulfill her own prophecy. Since its introduction, Toki has always been a mystery. As a survivor of the Void Century, she knows more about the world’s secret history than anyone, and she seems to have an uncanny connection to Wano and its future.
Oddly enough, when she first met Oden, she made it clear that she wanted to go to Wano. Later, when they arrive, she can’t go to Laugh Tale with him and the Roger Pirates and won’t let Oden stay with her. Many fans theorized that she knew what would happen to Wano after he left, knowing that Oden would be the only one who could stop Kaido and Orochi from gaining control of the island. There are even placards indicating that she knows that Momonosuke will need to lead Wano in the future.
The biggest possible hints that this person is actually Toki came from the night she passed away. Not only does she send a specific and particularly small group of Oden’s retainers to the future, but she also doesn’t send her own daughter along even though she might have. She then has various subordinates keeping Hiyori safe in the present while she loudly declares to Orochi his death 20 years later, completely ruining any chance of a sneak attack. Toki certainly knows more than she says, and most likely the person Orochi saw on Onigashima is really her.
As far as everything goes, there’s a lot going on in the raid – so much so that even this reveal isn’t the most significant event happening at the moment. It is clear who is using the Komurasaki cloak who plays an important role in the later story, but how they will affect the story remains a mystery. Fans will have to hope that series author Eiichiro Oda gives an answer soon.
