Have you ever wondered why there are so many “pink balls” landing in the League of Legends arena recently?
In recent years, more female champions have been released in League of Legends than men. According to main producer Ryan “Reav3” Mireles, this is completely in the plan of Riot.
In the comments section of a recent post on the League of Legends subreddit, Reav3 shed some light on Riot’s approach to releasing new champions. He explained that the devs are working towards balancing the roster so that eventually the gender ratio between champions will be 50/50.
He added that a couple of years ago, the devs realized that the roster was about 60/40 percent skewed towards male champions. He explained that, from Riot’s point of view, it’s better to keep the game even, leading the developers to focus on releasing more female champions.
“A couple of years ago, we looked at the overall diversity of our roster and… we had 60% male and 40% female,” said Reav3. “We feel in the long run, it’s probably better if the champion’s gender ratio in the game balances out at 50/50.”
Of the 10 most recently released champions, only 3 – Yone, Viego and Akshan – are male. The remaining seven are female, with Bel’Veth, the next name participating in the League of Legends arena will also be a female champion. To sum up, there are currently 98 male and 62 female champions in the game, including Bel’Veth.
It will take a very long time for Riot to approach the gender balance milestone at a rate of 50/50, but this is still something that gamers have to wait for. Many people think that the gender balance trend in League of Legends is being promoted by Riot Games to appease public opinion, after the company was involved in too many scandals about “sex discrimination in the working environment” cases. work” over the past few years.
