Special guests and members of the anime’s original voice cast will come together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sailor Moon anime’s premiere.

As announced by Japanese entertainment website Mantan Web, a special celebration of the beloved anime classic will be streamed live on YouTube on April 28. The live stream will mark the anniversary. 30 years since the original 1992 Sailor Moon anime premiere. The stream will feature cast members from the entire history of the series, including Kotono Mitsuishi, the original voice of Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon, and Shizuka Ito, who voiced Minako Aino / Sailor Venus in the series reboot of 2014 Sailor Moon Crystal. Japanese TV personality Shoko Nakagawa and musician Hyadain will also participate in the event.
Sailor Moon began as a manga series by author Naoko Takeuchi, first published in 1991. Takeuchi’s original manga series has been adapted into animation twice, with the anime being produced by Toei Animation and Directed by Junichi Sato. While the anime has several notable departures from its source material, the series was one of the first shoujo shows to be localized and broadcast outside of Japan. Both the original manga and the 1992 adaptation are celebrated as some of the most influential in the shoujo and magical girl genres, and the franchise maintains a devoted fan base to this day. .
In addition to streaming, the anime series will also celebrate its big anniversary with a number of business collaborations, the most notable of which is a new association with Sanrio. This partnership sees the Sailor Scouts team up with the company’s most popular mascots and will release costumes featuring characters from both franchises throughout the year.
A second adaptation of Takeuchi’s manga, titled Sailor Moon Crystal, premiered in 2014. The anime reboot is touted as a more faithful rendition of the source material. The Crystal series has continued with two Sailor Moon Eternal movies, premiering in Japan in early 2021, with international releases on Netflix.
