In episode 2 of Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, poor Izumi is hopelessly clumsy – and his classmates are getting tired of it.
Kodoani.com – The following has spoilers for Volume 2 of Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie.
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie is a brand new Spring 2022 anime, joining the ranks of countless high school comedy anime series to deliver some easy stories for casual fans. This includes many familiar tropes, some of which are overturned, such as the “cute, clumsy girl” idea. Instead, Shikimori actually plays a cute, clumsy boy alongside the typical protagonist.
This forms the basis of Episode 1, where Shikimori makes it her mission to protect her tender boyfriend Izumi from the dangers of his everyday life. But his clumsiness reaches new heights in Volume 2, and even Shikimori isn’t always around to help. Izumi found herself in big and fast trouble.
Episode 2 depicts a scene familiar to most anime fans: a series of sports tournaments, including intense all-day soccer, volleyball, and basketball games on campus. Shikimori shines brightly during a volleyball match, but watches in dismay as her clumsy boyfriend fumbles with a soccer game and injures himself. Izumi couldn’t do anything for his class and knew he was hopeless with sports. After that, he even needed Shikimori to protect him from falling down the stairs.
These scenes build on the theme of Volume 1 by establishing Izumi as a sweet and gentle shining male lead, ranging from poor athletic performance to a meek and dependent personality on Shikimori. This leaves Izumi with some glaring weaknesses that need to be overcome in later episodes, but at least his relationship with Shikimori still appears to be pure, similar to Gojo and Marin’s relationship in My Dress. -Up Darling. But unlike Gojo, poor Izumi has some serious problems on his hands – and not just his lousy soccer performance.
For now, Izumi’s outrageous clumsiness serves as a lifeline in the manga and character development for Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, but based on the events of volume 2, trouble could be lurking. . Clumsiness wasn’t just a joke for some people – it became a real problem for Izumi and friends. His best friend Inuzuka suffered constant blows that kept Izumi from harming him, and he was clearly tired of the matter. It puts an interesting but significant strain on their friendship, and can make it difficult for Izumi to keep any friends.
It also becomes a problem for Shikimori, even if she is agile enough to shield Izumi without getting hurt. She feels hurt when the guy recently started going home to Inuzuka instead of her, because he doesn’t want to continue to be a burden to his girlfriend. This inspires some yandere-esque possessive feelings in Shikimori, who can’t stand the sight of Izumi being happier with someone else than he is with her. The two quickly clear up this misunderstanding, but Izumi’s clumsiness makes two of his relatively few relationships difficult. Without Shikimori’s cute rom-com tunes, things could’ve been much worse.
Obviously something needs to change for Izumi to achieve significant character development in the future. Even if he doesn’t distance himself from Inuzuka or Shikimori, he could end up losing his audience instead, meaning Shikimori’s story is just as clumsy as he is – and that can never be a good thing. .
