Skydance wants to hit the ground running with its new Marvel game, but the recent failures of the Marvel games pose no few challenges.
Future Marvel titles could face an incredibly uphill battle.
Marvel seems to be everywhere these days, and some of the biggest video game companies are trying to grab a piece of that market. Square Enix took players on brand new adventures with both Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Firaxis tested IP through Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Insomniac blew fans away with its Marvel’s Spider-Man series, and now Skydance is taking the lead of the franchise for a new path with their new game. While all of that sounds exciting, future Marvel titles could face an incredibly uphill battle.
The only recent Marvel game that has had success is Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man title. The rest either didn’t have much love or were commercially disappointing for a variety of reasons. This puts a lot of pressure on future Marvel games and especially with Skydance’s upcoming title as it will be an opportunity for the studio to prove itself. While not much is known about the game yet, there’s already a lot of weight on its shoulders and that could prove its downfall.
Skydance will have to do things that exceed the expectations of Marvel fans
Recently released games that are not related to Marvel’s Spider-Man have not really resonated with players.
Skydance has a great team led by Amy Hennig, a veteran developer in the industry. The studio is built around the idea of delivering amazing new story-driven experiences that defy players’ expectations. While the studio doesn’t have any games to its name yet, it has signed a partnership with Disney for a new Star Wars and Marvel game. Not much is known about either game but they will likely have plenty of opportunities to prove to gamers.
At D23, Skydance revealed a little more information about its upcoming Marvel game, and many fans are excited to see more of the title. It will put the player in control of a team of four Marvel characters from World War 2. Players will be able to play as Captain America, World War 2 Black Panther, American soldiers Gabriel Jones and Nanali, the leader of the spy network of the United States. Wakanda. It is said to be a fast-paced adventure title inspired by Marvel’s rich history and will be a unique gift for IP fans.
It looks like Skydance is aiming to release its Marvel game before the Star Wars title, and that puts a lot of pressure on the game. It will need to show players that these IPs are in the hands of a good developer, that the studio knows how to develop quality experiences, and that Skydance exists to do so. The marketing campaign also needs to be invested to get gamers excited to buy the game, especially after so many Marvel titles have failed.
Skydance has yet to reveal any actual details for its Marvel game, and some fans must be worried about that. Recently released games that aren’t related to Marvel’s Spider-Man haven’t really resonated with players, even if they feature iconic characters from the Marvel universe. While it’s too early to judge Skydance’s game, there’s a lot going wrong for its launch.
Gamers will probably be learning more about Marvel’s upcoming game soon, and hopefully it can deliver what the community has come to expect. Marvel fans are desperate for a whole new fun experience to immerse themselves in for hours, and it’s time for more quality titles than the Spider-Man that dominates the genre. It may be hard to get to the top of Marvel’s Spider-Man, but Skydance will need to make the next game well if it is to have any chance of making a name for itself.
