Accordingly, the head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst said the company wants to increase investment in PC titles, mobile and live services.
Hulst revealed PlayStation’s strategy in an interview with Reuters. “Investing further in areas that will accelerate expansion into mobile games, PC and streaming services, that is definitely a possibility for us,” he said.
The head of PlayStation Studios also commented on the recent investment in FromSoftware. The company sees the deal as a partnership “above all and foremost in game development”. However, Sony does not rule out the possibility that they could produce a movie or a TV series based on Elden Ring or Dark Souls.
Analysts expect PlayStation to acquire more studios in the future. Kantan Games founder Serkan Toto also thought if Sony could shorten what they did with the single player experience but (as) the multiplayer experience across platforms, on PC, on consoles and even maybe even on the phone, all is possible.
How’s PlayStation’s expansion into mobile games going? Sony has gained a strong foothold in the PC space thanks to its acquisition of Nixxes Software, which brings PlayStation-exclusive features to PCs.
These ports also drive sales of PlayStation IPs like Spider-Man, Horizon, and God of War. There are several other PC versions in development, including Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part I. Sony is also expected to make $300 million from PC game releases in the fiscal year ending March 1. March 31, 2023.
In August 2022, PlayStation acquired mobile game developer Savage Game Studios to bring more IP to iOS and Android. The company also said that PC and mobile games will account for about 50% of revenue by March 2026. In January, Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion. The Destiny developer’s expertise in multiplayer games will help the company launch more than 10 live service titles by March 2026.
