The Loid Forger is introduced as a cold-hearted spy who will do whatever it takes to complete the mission. Episode 4, however, proves otherwise.
Kodoani.com – The following contains minor revelations for Spy x Family episode 4.
It’s been a month since the anime adaptation Spy x Family first debuted as part of the spring 2022 anime. However, every week, the show continues to teach audiences what family really means. The anime tells the story of agent Loid Forger, aka Twilight. For his latest mission, he secretly becomes a family man and adopts a six-year-old orphan named Anya, a girl with telepathic abilities. After adoption, in order to complete the family, Loid hastily married Yor Briar – who also had a secret life as an assassin.
In episode 4, “Honorable School Interview”, the day the family had been preparing for finally arrived. Loid has repeatedly stated that it is important to her mission that Anya get into Eden Academy. However, during the interview, Loid repeatedly jeopardized his mission to protect Anya and Yor.
The episode begins when Forgers arrives at Eden Academy among a crowd of other applicants. As soon as they walked through the front gate, both Yor and Loid felt eyes on them – which meant the selection process had begun. Staying elegant on their way to Assembly A, they passed the first stage of the test.
After overcoming the obstacles, they successfully reached the actual interview. At the outset, the committee asked them questions Loid had anticipated, and the Forger members readily provided answers. At some point, however, Murdoch Swan, an interviewer who enjoys disparaging families due to his recent divorce, asked about Yor’s cooking. She stuttered for a few seconds until Loid interrupted and revealed that she was cooking.
When Murdoch tries to humiliate Yor for not being able to cook for his family, Loid quickly defends her by saying that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. He praised Yor’s ability to clean the house and raise Anya. Still, Murdoch claims that’s what every woman should do. Just as Loid was about to enter an argument to protect Yor, she placates him. Loid tells himself to stay calm for his duty, questions his actions and reminds himself that Yor is not his own real wife.
Then the members started asking Anya questions. Although her answers are a bit confusing – like stating her desire to find out what the boss of the organization is up to, or going through the woods without an item and dancing with death to meet the boss – Loid quickly recovered the situation. He also lets Spy x Family audiences know that Loid really pays attention to what Anya watches on TV.
Towards the end of the interview, Murdoch continued, asking if Anya liked Yor or the previous mothers. Assuming answering this question will hurt Anya, Loid asks another question. However, Murdoch says that Forger will lose admission points if they don’t respond. As expected from a six-year-old, Anya began to cry. Loid tries to stay calm because of his mission. However, when his inner thoughts told him to restrain himself, he stood up with a fist ready to punch Murdoch. Instead, he held back and punched the table.
In his final moments, Loid turned his back on the interviewers and prepared to leave, expressing his disappointment with Eden Academy’s educational policies and noting that they had chosen the wrong school, as if I were a related father. Although describing his emotions as getting in the way of his mission as “unnecessary”, it’s clear that Loid is starting to care deeply about Anya and Yor – more than he admits. Twilight may not want to jeopardize her mission for the sake of her career, but it seems Loid Forger wants to succeed so she can spend more time with Anya and Yor.
