In the gaming world, it has become all too common for players to take on the role of a humanoid or anthropomorphic character, whose stories mostly involve only humans. However, there are plenty of video games that are perfect for animal lovers, whether it’s taking care of them or keeping them as companions. Blue Twelve Studio’s new Stray is a prime example of bringing an adorable animal into a digital environment and allowing players to experience the story in its own right. No wonder this game is gaining popularity right now.
According to the latest figures discovered by VGC, Stray is currently at number one in Steam’s top 250 games, at least in terms of user ratings. At the moment the game has a score of 8.61, with an overall rating of 98% “overwhelmingly positive” on the Steam platform of the 40,000 players who have officially purchased the game. If that’s not great enough, Stray is still at number 44 in the top 250 Steam games of all time.
It’s impossible to predict how long Stray will stay at the top of this table, but the game is even beating another popular big game right now. Earlier this year God of War had a pretty good run on Steam, but it seems Stray has surpassed the game at the moment. It’s clear that there’s something about being able to control a realistic cat that’s appealing to a lot of gamers.
In addition to being number one in user ratings, Stray also broke Annapurna Interactive’s concurrent player record on Steam recently when the game had over 50,000 players shortly after it was released. For comparison, Twelve Minutes, also released by Annapurna Interactive, only peaked at 8,021 people.
With the modding community having released several mods for the game, it’s clear that there is a lot of love among gamers for this “boss”-focused title. One thing that can be said for sure about the game is that it is a unique game. Allowing players to control a lifelike cat has attracted a lot of attention, and although the game’s completion time is less than 10 hours, it has clearly made an impact on the gaming community.
