Geoff Keighley said Summer Game Fest 2022 will mainly focus on announced games and gamers should not expect too much.
Summer Game Fest 2022 has been timed for a world premiere this month to showcase trailers and updates from around the gaming industry. Ahead of the Summer Game Fest showcase, host Geoff Keighley hosted a Twitter Space to let viewers around the world know what to expect.
Summer Game Fest is one of the major gaming events taking place throughout June alongside the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. Keighley’s month-long game celebration was one of the most anticipated activities this summer, partly due to the success of The Game Award. The annual rollout attracted more than 30 participating partners including SEGA, Activision, PlayStation, EA and miHoYo. Special guests like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will also be on the show to bring in a new audience beyond the traditional gaming industry.
Geoff Keighley urged viewers to exercise restraint and not expect “big shocks” or games that are rumored to sound too great to be true. Summer Game Fest will mainly focus on announced games like The Callisto Protocol, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Gotham Knights. Keighley reiterated by saying that the show was “not The Game Awards,” implying that major game announcements should be on the show in December rather than Summer Game Fest. Still, he’s excited because the event features exclusive Nintendo Switch and Xbox games, “huge titles,” and more indie titles.
The Summer Game Festival event is scheduled to run for almost two hours, but Keighley isn’t entirely sure due to the arrival of guests and the process of setting up the live streams. Gamers can expect to see a bunch of in-game footage, such as the first gameplay for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Although Summer Game Fest focuses on announced games, Keighley looks forward to it. More new game announcements will be made in the coming weeks at events like the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.
Gamer expectations for the Summer Game Fest are growing as the date approaches, that excitement may be due to the absence of this year’s E3. Keighley has proactively limited expectations for the Summer Game Fest and as such will allow players to watch the event with a more open mind without being easily disappointed. Gamers who are excitedly looking forward to the games releasing later this year can still have a good time watching the new footage and trailers during the event.
On the other hand, Summer Game Fest has faced criticism from viewers in previous years due to its lack of compelling content and revelations. Speculation surrounding the games being rumored is a lot, but at a glance it seems that Summer Game Fest is not the place for such games.
