Episode 3 Summer Time Render – Knowing that Shadows really exist, how can we trust the people of this island?
Episode 3 Summer Time Render is a lot slower than the previous 2 episodes, but there is still a strange atmosphere as we continue with the mystery. There are a few things I wonder about that were mentioned in this episode: Knowing that Shadow really exists, how can we trust the people of this island? We don’t know the number of Shadows and where they are hiding, but right now I’m more worried about Shinpei and Mio.
I like that Shinpei doesn’t fully trust Sou and uses words against him… even though the two are close friends. But the second Sou said all of that making me increasingly wary of him and even Tokiko. At this point you can’t really trust anyone but Mio as we know for sure this is the real Mio and not her Shadow.
But Sou has certainly made himself suspect, or maybe we viewers are being tricked in episode 3 Summer Time Render. Sou seems pretty normal but I’m curious what he’s talking about when he says he wants to consider something important. Also, I’m not too sure about the code they came up with. When we see Mio create a Shadow clone of Tetsu, he seems to have completely regained his entire personality and memories. Fake Tetsu acts just like the real Tetsu, like knowing everyone’s names and his usual eating habits at the cafe. So if Shadow could also copy the memory of the original, that would render their code completely useless.
This makes things all the more unsettling because as far as we know, there really aren’t any obvious features they can use to distinguish the Shadows. If the memory duplication is true, they can’t even ask a personal question to tell them apart. So, with Sou behaving normally and being friendly as usual doesn’t necessarily rule him out. And again, he’s really been suspicious the whole time.
Now, we know the answer to what happened at the funeral. Shiori was copied and most likely is now dead and gone. Meanwhile Shiori’s Shadow was at the funeral. Might be the reason why the glasses woman was there in the first place, so we can conclude that her words in the forest were directed at Shiori and not Shinpei. I said maybe, because in this episode Shinpei mentioned that he’s been obsessed with obsessions since the funeral.
If I understand correctly, being affected by the phobia means that he has been copied and you don’t have to see your Shadow to be tormented by the pain. Just being copied is enough. So that means, even if we don’t have solid proof right now, that it was Shiori who copied Shinpei during the funeral and there might be a Shinpei Shadow lurking somewhere. But to my suspicion, maybe Sou was copied. I know that Shinpei said he has a headache, but we won’t know for sure until we see another Shinpei.
Anyway, that scene with Shiori Ball was really creepy, it was done very well. This episode 3 of Summer Time Render is more interesting, I will not discuss whether this love is incest or not. The most important thing in the end of the episode is said to be Ushio walking through the festival and Shinpei running after her.
Shinpei left the group for the second time to follow her but in the end nothing happened and I expected nothing but terrible things to happen next time. I don’t think this is the real Ushio, it could just be her Shadow. But then something really hit. This is the Ushio we are talking about. She died very recently and had just had a funeral. Ushio is known in the island community a lot so people really love her. So how did no one at the festival recognize her and react? Was Shinpei simply hallucinating, or is there some other strange phenomenon that we don’t know yet? It makes things even weirder.
Either way, I feel this is a big mistake for Shinpei. Knowing what they know, this is not the time to part ways, especially when you’re chasing the Shadow of the Just Dead Girl. I was expecting Shinpei to get shot or stabbed at the end of episode 3 Summer Time Render, but instead we ended the episode with a beautiful song and beautiful shot of Ushio standing in the water in front of the fireworks. Indeed, this anime has very beautiful visuals.
We may soon receive Shinpei’s death again because I really think he will have to die many times. I’ve seen manga readers spoil a bit about the next chapters so I’m very much looking forward to what happens.
