This is the story of the time before “Lightning” and “Black Swordsman” were known by those names…
On the day that she accidentally received the NerveGear, Asuna Yuuki was a third year high school student who had never even touched an online game before. On November 6, 2022, the world’s first VRMMORPG, Sword Art Online, officially launched. But the players, still euphoric for being logged in, suddenly found themselves stuck in the game when the Game Master didn’t give them any way to log out.
The Game Master then issues this warning “This may be a game, but it’s not what you imagine.” If a player dies in the game, he dies in the real world.
Hearing this, all the players panicked, and the pandemic was reigning. One of those players was Asuna, but even though she didn’t know the rules of this world yet, she set out to conquer the floating iron castle, Aincrad, whose peak was too unseen. As the days passed in a world where death was never far away, she had a fateful encounter. And then, a farewell…
Even though she was facing the truth before her eyes, Asuna fought with all her might until someone appeared in front of her: the swordsman Kirito…
Ayako Kohno (Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, High School Fleet, The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky) unit director) is directing the film at A-1 Pictures, and Kento Toya (Sword Art Online: Alicization) – Underworld’s War, The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments) designed the characters. Yasuyuki Kai is directing the action, and Yuki Kajiura is returning to composing the music.
The anime is based on the Sword Art Online: Progressive novel series. The series debuted in 2012 as a revised retelling of Kawahara’s original Sword Art Online novels. The story describes Kirito’s journey through the floating Aincrad castle from the ground up, floor by floor

Aniplex of America and Eleven Arts opened the film in the United States in March 2017 following its Hollywood premiere earlier that month. The film was also shown in Canada.
