Recently, director Taika Waititi had a few comments about actor Christian Bale’s performance as Gorr – The Godslayer.
Thor: Love and Thunder is the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017), which will also be the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is produced by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney in 2022. The film is directed by Taika Waititi and written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor alongside Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Russell Crowe. In the film, Thor recruits Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster (Portman) — now Mighty Thor — to stop Gorr the God-slayer (Bale) from destroying all the gods.
And recently, director Taika Waititi talked about Christian Bale’s performance as Gorr in Thor: Love & Thunder:
“In my humble opinion, I think we could be about to see Marvel’s most impressive villain ever hit the screen!”
It can be said that Taika Waititi greatly appreciated Bale’s performance as the Godslayer. Is it an overblown flattery, can an actor of Christian Bale’s caliber become the best villain in the MCU or is it just Taika Waititi’s exaggeration? We’ll have to wait until the movie hits theaters to get a real answer, but at least the director’s praise for Christian Bale also helps audiences get more excited about Thor: Love and Thunder.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor tries to find inner peace, but is interrupted when the god-slayer Gorr threatens to eliminate all the gods. To eliminate the danger before it’s too late, Thor gathers allies including the newly appointed king of New Asgard – Valkyrie, Korg and Jane Foster, who has become Mighty Thor to all join forces and fight back. Gorr – God Slayer.
In the comics, Gorr the God Butcher was born on an unnamed planet, almost every day on the brink of famine. He was taught to trust the gods, but they never answered his prayers. As a child, his father and mother died, leaving Gorr to fend for himself in the harsh environment. Years later, he married and had several children. However, most of them died. Gorr’s pregnant mate, Arra, was killed in an earthquake, and his children died one by one until he was left with one son, Agar. As Agar was dying of hunger, Gorr sought to ease his grief and told his son that they would soon reach a forest where they would never go hungry again.
Grieving after Agar’s death, Gorr gave up hope and demonstrated that his faith was no longer dependent on the gods. After a fateful encounter, Gorr gained possession of the All-Black the Necrosword. Then Gorr began his journey to slaughter each god to take revenge for believing that the supreme beings had abandoned his race.
