Warning: This article contains spoilers for episode 13 of the Kimetsu no Yaiba season 2 anime.
Tanjiro’s scar has become the subject of controversy and confusion for fans in Kimetsu no Yaiba. For the second time in the Entertainment District arc, Shinjuro Rengoku, Kyojuro’s father, answered one of the big questions in a humorous (no pun intended) way. As it turned out, the scar on Tanjiro’s forehead was associated with certain meanings, not just the Todoroki scar caused by scalds.
Tanjiro was born without scars. Rather, it only appeared after Tanjiro saved his brother from an incident of dropping a hot tea pot. At the beginning of the story, the scar is a light pink round mark on the head. The remarkable thing about the scar is that although it is not a birth mark, Tanjiro’s father also has a similar mark in the same place on his forehead. However, his scar was never clearly explained, leaving it as a coincidence is also not really convincing.
After receiving a direct blow to the head, Tanjiro bleeds and has to be bandaged in the following episodes. However, when the bandages were finally removed, Tanjiro’s scar changed. It turns jagged, crimson. No one noticed this transformation throughout the film, even many viewers thought that this was simply a graphical modification to make the character look cooler.
By the “Entertainment District” arc, Tanjiro’s scar is now the most talked about topic. During his battle with Daki, the Supreme Legend, Tanjiro remembers a letter he received from Shinjuro Rengoku after the two’s unpleasant encounter. Shinjuro seems to be the only one who knows something about Sun-Breathing, and in this letter, Shinjuro explains to Tanjiro that the scar on his head is the mark of someone chosen to use the technique.
However, Shinjuro may not have grasped all the facts, as this character claims to be innate, while this is not the case for Tanjiro. But Shinjuro’s opinion is not easily refuted, because according to Muzan’s memory when appearing in Daki’s subconscious, there appeared a man wearing Hanafuda earrings – the symbol of the breath of the sun – this person also has The scar closely resembles Tanjiro’s. It should be noted that Tanjiro’s father, who taught Tanjiro Sun-Breathing, also had a large scar on his forehead.
After all, there are many details that support Shinjuro’s opinion. Sun-Breathing is something that is randomly chosen and born, not a technique everyone can learn. It is the most powerful Breathing Style of all the Breathing styles as well as truly capable of harming Muzan Kibutsuji and the upper classes. Seeing the intrinsic reaction of Muzan cells to memories to Tanjiro’s resemblance to the one who knew Sun-Breathing, the demon’s predecessor Muzan revealed a displeased expression. The only thing Tanjiro needs to do now is live long enough to master Hinokami Kagura, as Muzan clearly doesn’t want this to happen, despite the fact that Tanjiro could lose his life if he unleashed the full power of Sun-Breathing.
