In early September, the tactical competitive shooting game Ring of Elysium developed by Tencent announced its closure.
The announcement about the fate of the game Ring of Elysium was made on the Steam community and the official website, stating that the game will be shut down on December 1. Currently, players cannot download this game on Steam and Players who have downloaded the game cannot make any in-game purchases.
Ring of Elysium was developed by Yu Haipeng, president of Northern Lights Studio Group, and is Tencent’s first client game present at the E3 exhibition, launched on the Steam platform on September 19, 2018. Currently, the game Reviewed by over 100,000 players, with a positive rate of 74%. A representative for the game informed in the post that Tencent has introduced a Creative Review policy regarding the project’s research and development costs that makes the game too large to continue.
When Ring of Elysium launched, the game was compared by many players to PUBG, Call of Duty and Battlefield. Northern Lights Studio then continued to optimize and improve techniques but could not compensate for the research and operating experience of some personnel. According to Steam DB data, the game’s peak online player count exceeded 60,000 in November 2018. However, starting in April 2020, the number of daily players dropped below 5,000 and this year this number is less than 500. The last content update for the game in October 2021 signaled that the game would almost no longer be able to continue serving players.
Ring of Elysium continues the story with each different installment and adds 3 new characters to the game, each with their own backstory and connection to the events taking place. In Part 1, the setting is the snowy mountains of Mt. Dione, the participating gamer, must fight until four people can escape the catastrophic snowstorm Ymir. In Part 2, players are taken to the island of Europa, where once again, you must fight for your survival, needing to escape a volcanic eruption and falling ash across the map.
The story begins with three characters from the Elysium universe: Lynn, Hikage and Gavin. In the classic match, 60 people are trapped in the snowy mountain map Mt. Dione, threatened by the snowstorm Ymir. The way out is a rescue flight that can only save a maximum of 4 people. Players are equipped with skis, climbing equipment or gliders to overcome this difficult terrain.
