Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno is currently writing the script for an untitled game.
Matsuno is best known for the beloved classic Final Fantasy Tactics, along with one of Square Enix’s most popular role-playing games, Vagrant Story.
Working together on the very popular titles of the Square Enix universe, it seems that members of the company’s creative team have also developed close personal relationships. Recently, FF series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi shared that Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story director Yasumi Matsuno is currently working on an untitled new game.
Gamers will probably recognize both Sakaguchi and Matsuno’s work in the Final Fantasy universe. Sakaguchi’s name has appeared in the credits of various Final Fantasy games, as a designer, director or producer. On the other hand, Matsuno is best known for the beloved classic Final Fantasy Tactics, along with one of Square Enix’s most popular role-playing games, Vagrant Story. Since the two have worked together on many of the company’s popular titles, they can also easily get information about each other’s projects.
In a recent interview with a Japanese website, Sakaguchi was asked about the work he is most interested in in 2021. He mentioned that Matsuno is working as a script writer. for a new untitled game, and he’s looking forward to it from Matsuno. Sakaguchi did not give any details regarding the name of the game as well as the platform of the game, making many RPG fans curious with this new project. Since Vagrant Story still doesn’t have a sequel or any remake, many gamers speculate that these are content Matsuno may be working on and preparing to release.

However, it is also possible that Matsuno is working on writing more scripts for Square Enix’s MMO Final Fantasy 14. Matsuno has nonetheless written several storylines for game expansions such as Stormblood and Shadowbringers. Moreover, Matsuno is also a Final Fantasy 14 gamer and has played the game with Sakaguchi, so it is likely that there will be more scenarios in Matsuno’s creative path.
Since there is no official news from Matsuno, gamers will have to wait for updates from him. With Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion set to add more content in the coming months, some of the scenarios may have been written by Matsuno. The new game could also be a new installment to Vagrant Story after so many years as many gamers have come to expect. However RPG gamers are also looking for new changes so hopefully this will be a brand new IP led by Matsuno.
