TikTok can be “addictive” due to the content suggestion algorithm that keeps viewers strangely hooked.
Some young people who are determined to study for exams have deleted this application on their phones. TikTok is one of the main causes of student distraction.
Eleanor Crabbe (22) decided to delete the TikTok app from her device after realizing that she was wasting too much time on it instead of focusing on more important things.
Eleanor Crabbe is about to take her master’s exam at Cardiff University.
“It seems I have become addicted to TikTok because I spend so much time on it.” Eleanor shared.
However, unable to resist the excitement when surfing to new videos, Eleanor had to learn to control herself. She also refines content so that TikTok’s algorithm only shows funny videos, not useless content.
By focusing more on her studies, Eleanor seems to have completed her exams and could become a master’s degree in the future.
Like Eleanor, Ed Barnes (24) was also determined to delete TikTok to focus on his work. However, he shared that he will never download again.
“Of all the social networks I use, TikTok is the most addictive, there are probably many people just like me. TikTok has the ability to suggest showing viewers videos that match their tastes, so I got caught up in it and lost a lot of time.”
Ed Barnes said, once he was only going to surf TikTok for a few minutes to take a break, but after looking at his watch, Ed realized he had wasted an hour. That’s why Ed has no intention of downloading TikTok anymore.
Psychologist Nia Williams explains TikTok’s “addictive” ability:
“Videos on TikTok are short and have easy-to-watch content that is interesting to the audience. Every content that the audience searches for is recorded, thereby suggesting new similar content to attract them.”
TikTok is considered a giant in the technology world, there is no shortage of ways for them to retain viewers to collect advertising money.
Catherine Keenan, a KOL on TikTok, thinks that the fault is on the viewer’s part not knowing how to control their own time. She advises that it is not necessary to delete the app completely, but just a little self-discipline.
“TikTok also has a lot of useful and scientific content.” Catherine said, she herself has been motivated through videos on TikTok to overcome times when she is not in a good mood in life, or when she is too stressed because of work.
