In the midst of so many perils of space, the moon seems to be the trusted ally that Earth has the least to worry about. But the latest film by director Roland Emmerich Moonfall (Vietnamese title: Falling Moon) will challenge that belief. Possessing a bright cast and a huge budget, this is a blockbuster not to be missed this weekend.
Investment capital up to 150 million USD brings eye-catching techniques
Moonfall is one of the biggest budget indie films ever. Director Emmerich shared, to make a big-budget independent film in the context of the pandemic is almost “a miracle”.
With a large capital, the work promises to bring about a grandiose scene that realistically portrays the apocalypse when the moon is in danger of colliding with the blue planet. Famous names like Scanline VFX (Don’t Look Up, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings…), Pixomondo, Framestore and DNEG will be in charge of the visual effects for Moonfall.
Right from the trailer, viewers can see how epic the scale of the film is. The stunning and terrifying space footage shows how small humans are in the face of natural forces. A scene that looks out over Los Angeles from behind the famous Griffith Observatory, with its terrifying columns of black smoke rising into the sky, evokes fear and despair.
Considered a combination between 2012 and Independence Day, this is a work worthy of being released in theaters to fully enjoy the audio-visual part.
Bright stars
Halle Berry (Catwoman, X-Men, John Wick: Chapter 3…) leads the all-star cast as former astronaut Jo Fowler. She was the first to detect the lurking danger and tried to warn everyone before it was too late.
“Mr” Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring, Insidious, Aquaman…) plays astronaut Brian Harper. Brian and Jo both had past relationships, and he was one of the few people who believed Jo’s disaster warning. So he decided to join the mission to try to stop the moon from destroying the Earth.
John Bradley (Shameless, Game of Thrones…) plays KC Houseman – a conspiracy theorist that Emmerich describes as the “heart” of Moonfall. The director even compared Bradley’s character Samwell Tarly from the Game of Thrones series to his character in the movie, and said that both characters are funny but bring a lot of emotion. Houseman was the first to discover orbital problems with the moon.
The supporting cast of “Moonfall” gathers many notable names. Michael Peña (Narcos: Mexico, Ant-Man, The Martian…) plays Tom Lopez, a wealthy car dealer who is married to Brian’s ex-wife.
Veteran star Donald Sutherland (Pride and Prejudice, The Hunger Games series) plays the controller of NASA’s secret archives. He experienced an intense psychological struggle between keeping a secret for NASA or revealing the truth to the world.
In addition, Moonfall also has the contribution of beautiful Vu Van Van and young star Charlie Plummer.
Based on the famous “Hollow Moon” conspiracy theory
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Roland Emmerich shared that the Hollow Moon conspiracy theory was the main inspiration for Moonfall. After consulting the documents, the film crew developed their own story. Emmerich co-wrote Moonfall with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen.
First mentioned by scientist Edmond Halley in 1692, it was not until the 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells that officially appeared on paper. Theories surrounding the Hollow Moon believe that Earth’s natural satellite harbors hollow space beyond its cold, dead surface. How the disaster movie king developed this idea, go to theaters to explore and find out!
Eye-catching, suffocating, surprising but also extremely humane, the audience will experience many levels of emotions when enjoying Moonfall in theaters! MOONFALL – Vietnamese title: THE MOON FAILS – premiered on February 18, 2022.
