As the lead actress, Lily-Rose Depp frankly shared her views on The Idol after the film was criticized as “luxurious sloppiness”.
During the press conference at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for the new series The Idol, Lily-Rose Depp – the film’s female lead – shared her views on this film in the face of criticism from critics. In it, the actress affirmed that the “hot scenes” in the film are necessary to express the “nakedness of emotions” of the character.
“What’s special about Joycelyn (the main character) is that she was born to be a performer. I think that affects every aspect of her life, not just her career,” said Lily-Rose. Depp said, “The way Joycelyn dresses is like trying to tell people something or trying to express herself in some way.”
“And I also think that sometimes leaving a character naked is also a reflection of the emotional nakedness that we can see in the character,” daughter Johnny Depp continued.

Although only showing the first 2 episodes of the series at the Cannes Film Festival, it was enough to shock critics and audiences with the obscenity and liberality that the film brought. However, with director Sam Levinson, he affirmed that the film is a reflection of American culture, especially the main character Joycelyn – the entertainment star – and their influence on young psychology.
“It’s funny, sometimes revolutionary things get pushed too far,” director Sam Levinson told reporters. “I think we live in a vulgar world. We see this. in pop music and how it reflects in some way the underworld of the Internet”.

After the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, critics became chaotic following this film. New York Times critic Kyle Buchanan shuddered, saying the film was nothing more than “a porn site starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd”. Or as The Wrap did not hesitate to call The Idol “a slut under the luxury label”. Some words like “hate”, “horrible”, “disgusting” “television version of the dirty view fishing game” have also been used by experts to describe this film. The discussion immediately spread when the audience themselves were curious about the film that is said to portray the true perspective of Hollywood.
After the first two episodes were premiered early at the Cannes Film Festival, The Idol will officially premiere on June 4.
