On the evening of yesterday – January 7, Riot Games had a relatively long livestream to introduce their plans for League of Legends in 2022. In addition to traditional content such as new skins, new champions, rework votes… the information about the upcoming branded system has also received a lot of attention.
Basically, Riot will remove the existence of Gems and Prestige Points, instead they will add a new currency called Legendary Essence. This currency will be used to exchange for items where players previously had to use Gems and Prestige Points. At the upcoming Mythical Essence store, you can exchange old Brand skins and new Mythic skins. Regarding this skin line, Riot has only teased about Ancient Knight Pyke.
Everything here seems quite reasonable when Riot reduces the amount of currency that gamers own in the game and brings them to a single store. However, in phase 2, gamers discovered about the content called “Event Treasure Progress”. In a word, when you complete this process, you will receive the Prestige skin of that event. To complete that process, gamers are forced to buy and open 25 boxes of the corresponding event.
It is worth mentioning here that with the current event system, gamers only need to buy Event Tickets (priced at 1650 RP at Riot’s server) and “plot” points to be able to own Branded skins. However, with the new system, Riot forces players to buy a box to own the Premium skin of that event. That means to own a new Branded skin, you have to spend up to 18750 RP, 10 times higher than the current one. This surprised the League of Legends community when Riot raised the price so strongly.
Riot wants us to spend more than 100 USD on new Prestige skins
If you don’t know, the Mythic skin system will change. You cannot randomly get Mythic skins and old Prestige skins will be kept and sold for 20 Gems. What’s worse is this new Prestige point system. You only have one way to get the new Prestige skin, which is to open 25 event boxes (price 750 RP) to get that skin.
Before, we could earn points and redeem but now it costs up to 18750 RP (over 130 USD) and this is absolutely crazy. Before, I only needed to spend 1650 RP to be able to get it. I don’t know what’s worse between Riot deciding to do this or people actually paying for it.
Of course, when opening event boxes, players will randomly receive other items and they also have a certain value. However, it is not a good idea to lock the Prestige skin of each event after 25 boxes. Hopefully they will have more reasonable tweaks to this system, maybe increase the value of items that open from the event box and treasure progress to make it more attractive to gamers, for example.
