Warning! Contains some minor spoilers about MamaYuyu Chapter #1!Jump ShonenThe author’s latest manga brings a breath of fresh air to some of the tired Fantasy genre, making it a must-read for fans of that genre. The series plays with these tropes while also acknowledging other iconic series that came before it like the dark fantasy masterpiece Berserk. Although very different from the aforementioned manga and many other fantasy series, this new manga is still worth checking out.
This new series is MamaYuyu, created by Yoshihiko Hayaki. The film tells the story of a teenager named Corleo, a hero whose mission is to defeat the Demon King. However, the fantasy world he lives in is currently in a period of peace, with demons and humans coexisting, so he is unsure of his purpose. The fact that he was raised by the Demon Lord certainly does not simplify matters, as the two have developed a strong family bond. One day, a much braver Hero from another world arrives, predicting that his Demon Lord will soon invade Corleo’s world, which starts the boy on the path to self-discovery.
MamaYuyu is a refreshing take on the dynamic Hero and Demon Lord
This is a clever take on the popular fantasy story of a chosen hero setting out to defeat the evil Demon Lord. In recent years, that saying has become quite a cliché as a number of series, many of them isekai series, have copied the formula with very minor tweaks. This has led to many series parodying these tropes such as Part-Time Devils, Konosuba, and Cautious Heroes. Both genres of these series have saturated the anime and manga industries, making any further attempts to say something new in the genre met with reader indifference.
MamaYuyu’s first chapter exudes a seriousness that makes it enjoyable for even the most die-hard Fantasy fans. The clever way it ties the chosen roles of Hero and Demon Lord to the struggle for personal identity suggests that it may have more to say than most stories that use allegories this language. Additionally, the homages to dark fantasy series like Berserk with the grittier Heroes and Demon Lords show that Hayaki has great respect and passion for these types of stories, making other fans of the genre This story is enjoyable to read. All of this makes MamaYuyu a must-read for Fantasy fans.
