TOHO animation announced on February 16, 2023 that they and OLM are producing an anime adaptation of Natsu Hyuga and Touko Shino’s Light Novel Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) that will premiere this year. Aoi Yuki will voice the main character Maomao.
Norihiro Naganuma is directing the anime at TOHO animation and OLM, and Naganuma is also supervising the script. Akinori Fudesaka is the assistant director. Yukiko Nakatani is designing the characters.
Katsumi Takao is the art director, while Misato Aida is the main color artist. Yū Nagai is the CGI director. Rumi Ishiguro is the director of general photography. Daisuke Imai is in charge of editing. Shōji Hata is the sound director. Satoru Kousaki, Kevin Penkin, and Arisa Okehazama are all composing the music for the anime.
The story is described:
In the imperial court, a young girl was made a slave, Maomao. The story opens when Maomao (doctor from the red light district) hears about the emperor’s child being stillborn. Her curious nature and thirst for knowledge made her take action. So what did she find? What is going on in the royal court?
Hyūga began serializing the story on the website “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” (Become a Novelist) in October 2011. Shufunotomo published the first print volume with illustrations by Shino in August 2014 and The 13th volume will be published on February 25th.
Nekokurage launched a manga adaptation of the light novel series in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017. Square Enix will publish the manga’s 11th volume on February 25.
