The Outlast trials – a spin-off to the popular survival horror game Outlast, announces the early access release date.
An early access release date has been announced for the highly anticipated birth horror title – The Outlast Trials. Developer Red Barrels explores a new experiment in the Outlast universe with its upcoming four-player coop title. Players can work together to survive the horrors of Murkoff Corporation’s latest horrifying experiment. It looks like the Red Barrels are hoping to do some testing of their own, with The Outlast Trials going into early access soon.
Up to this point, Outlast is still the single-player brand of nightmare survival horror games. Outlast launched in 2013, introducing players to Murkoff Corporation’s experiments with insane prisoners. Outlast 2 introduces another Murkoff experiment, this time leading to the rise of a murderous cult. The Red Barrels have since decided to take Outlast in a different direction, leaving behind the campaign-driven single-player horror games in favor of something new.
The Outlast Trials is where the Red Barrels want to make their next horror series. Each “trial” will feature one to four players working to complete missions, avoid monstrous enemies, and survive to escape. The game is designed to be repeatable, perhaps like an online game. It’s not entirely clear how the progression and long-term storytelling will work, but that’s what players can expect to find out when The Outlast Trials officially launches this May.
In a trailer released last week, Red Barrels confirmed that The Outlast Trials’ early access will begin on May 18. However, the trailer reveals very little about the gameplay, instead That focuses on the game’s voice actor clips that deliver terrible audio feedback. At least it conveys the atmosphere of The Outlast Trials. The video also confirms early access is coming to both Steam and the Epic Games Store, so PC gamers will have the option to choose the store they want.
The Outlast Trials has been in development since 2017. At the time, Red Barrels described it as a “smaller separate project” made because Outlast 2 was not designed to be expanded with DLC. The scope of The Outlast Trials has clearly grown since then. Red Barrels previously said they would make Outlast 3 after this project, but those plans may have changed.
Despite what appears to be an online service-like structure, The Outlast Trials has previously been confirmed not to be a free-to-play game. Therefore, although Red Barrels is asking fans to “volunteer” to experience the early access version of The Outlast Trials, it is possible that this is still a paid version of the game.
