The strict regulations since the pandemic until now have made many students at Shanghai University (China) feel like they are under house arrest.
To limit the risk of a resurgence of Covid-19, many universities in China have issued regulations restricting the activities of students both inside and outside the school. Familiar regulations since the pandemic are still raging such as regular Covid testing, keeping a safe distance when in contact, etc.
In particular, students at Shanghai University are required not to leave the campus except for force majeure, if they want to go out, they must write an application and do some other procedures. Many students shared that this regulation made them feel like they were returning to the period when the city suffered the most severe Covid-19 outbreak.
The majority of students think that the above regulation is a bit excessive, because over the past time, the rate of people infected with Covid-19 in the city is very low. Some students could not stand this “confinement” so they moved out of the dormitory.
Wang Mengmeng (24 years old), studying for a master’s degree here, decided to rent a house outside rather than continue in the dormitory, he said:
“The situation in the dormitory is even stricter than in the school, they only give students exactly 10 minutes to get out of the room and do everything, of course not out of the campus.”
Even if you go more than 10 minutes, this student is considered to be expelled.
Not only with Shanghai University, students at Jiaying University in Guangdong are also subject to extremely strict regulations. Students are prohibited from leaving campus even on weekends.
Zhong Yurou, a student at Gia Ying University, said these regulations forced her and many friends to cancel all extracurricular activities outside.
“No going out, no watching movies, no extracurricular activities even on weekends, the school thinks that’s not a good reason to go out.” Yurou said.
Many other universities in China have even delayed the start of the new semester due to the fact that more than 10,000 new infections have been recorded. The tough regulations make many students feel tired and uncomfortable, many people think they are not enjoying the true life of a university student.
However, another part of students is very positive, they share that they are gradually adapting to this strict lifestyle.
Zhang Luyao, a student at Shanghai University of Foreign Studies said:
“These regulations give me more time at home to take care of myself, I will make the most of it for my work.”
