This movie was released 17 years ago but when re-shown it still makes many audiences feel surprised because of its timeless quality.
Heroic Blood is a film project in the martial arts genre directed by Charlie Nguyen, gathering a famous star cast with names such as Ngo Thanh Van, Johnny Tri Nguyen, Dustin Tri Nguyen, Nguyen Thang… Launched in 2007 , the work immediately impressed thanks to its neat visuals, vivid sound, beautiful fight scenes, strong acting from the cast and relatively tight script content.
Heroic Blood was released in 2007 directed by Charlie Nguyen.
The story of Heroic Blood is set in Vietnam in the early 20th century, when our country was still colonized by the French colonialists. Resistance movements among the people emerged everywhere, causing the French government to decide to train a number of Vietnamese people to become a special task force specializing in hunting and destroying these forces. The leader of the campaign is Sy (Dustin Nguyen), tasked with finding and capturing the insurgent leader De Canh (Nguyen Van Day).
Once, De Canh's insurgents plotted to assassinate the Chief of Secret Service but were hindered by Sy's group. Thuy (Ngo Thanh Van), De Canh's daughter, was also captured alive to testify. Cuong (Johnny Tri Nguyen) – a secret agent in Sy's army – then decided to help and escape with her. However, this is actually just a plot to gain Thuy's trust so she can lead them to her father's place.
Heroic Blood draws attention with its huge investment scale, with a budget of up to 1.6 million USD. The work was filmed over 4 months in many provinces and cities across the country with a strong film crew. The costumes in the movie alone amount to over 300 sets. At that time, the average budget of the highest domestic film productions often did not exceed the 5 billion VND mark.
When released, The Blood of Heroes was highly appreciated by domestic critics, saying that the work approached the quality of international film projects even though there were some minus points. The same year, the film won the Silver Lotus Award and 4 individual awards. However, despite being heavily promoted, the work was not successful at the box office, causing director Charlie Nguyen to give up the idea of investing in making sequels. Recently, the director shared that it will take until 2023 for the crew to pay off all the debt and losses of this work.
Recently, the work received a lot of attention from the nationwide film-loving community after being re-screened at several cinema events in Ho Chi Minh City. Film critic Le Hong Lam wrote on his personal page after re-enjoying the work: “The film ends on screen with many emotions remaining in the hearts of the audience, with many acknowledgments that 'I didn't think Vietnam could make a movie like that' from many young viewers watching this movie on the big screen for the first time, the humorous and inspiring sharing of the two brothers Charlie & Johnny Tri Nguyen made The audience applauded continuously after each of their answers.
I said that if The Blood of Heroes is released at this time, right during this long holiday, I predict that this movie will earn from 300-500 billion VND, depending on the spread of the audience. . But Heroic Blood was released 17 years ago, at a time when Vietnam only had 20 movie theaters (screening rooms, not theaters) and movie tickets at that time seemed to only cost 40,000 VND. And the inevitable consequence is that the film with a budget of up to 1 million USD (at a time when domestic films had the highest production budget of about 5 billion VND) suffered heavy losses.
Along with that support, a movement calling on theaters to re-release Heroic Blood on the big screen to reach the younger generation of audiences is being launched by many figures in the film industry. Director Charlie Nguyen also said he is ready to release a REDUX version (extended version) of the film if there is a chance to re-release it.
