Top 5 details in One Piece Odyssey that you should know before the game has an official release date.
On March 28, 2022, a special YouTube program titled “ONE PIECE NEWS – NEWS COO ONLINE -” revealed various information about Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga series, which has been serialized in the magazine. Weekly Shonen Jump, most notably the new game One Piece Odyssey, is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam in 2022.
The One Piece Odyssey reveal was so sudden and unexpected that many fans probably missed some details in the game’s recent trailer release. The trailer has some hints about the characters, and the gameplay mechanics are talked about, here are the top 5 details in One Piece Odyssey that you need to know before the game officially releases.
1. Recruit members for story play
If you look closely at the various scenes in the trailer, you’ll notice that there are several scenes in which several members of the Straw Hat Pirates go missing. There is a scene with only Luffy, Nami and Usopp, except for the rest of the members Franky and Brook. After that, there will be a boss fight and Franky and Brook will appear in another scene.
Like other typical JRPGs, members of the Straw Hat Pirates will gradually join our party as we open up new chapters in the story play. In the first segment when the Thousand Sunny is destroyed and it is likely that all the characters have been scattered temporarily, facing different challenges before reuniting.
2. Besides Luffy, the Straw Hats are playable in One Piece Odyssey
One of the biggest complaints about the previous One Piece RPG is that One Piece World Seeker only allows Luffy to be played in the main game, and the other characters are only played in DLC content for a short time. One Piece fans can fully celebrate now as the newly revealed trailer confirms that One Piece Odyssey will let players experience other characters from the Straw Hat Pirates.
Moreover, each character will have a separate story play that is different from previous games. For example, we see Chopper running in a narrow cave, or Nami about to interact with an electrical device to prepare for some plan. You will be able to play each character’s play separately before you can get your hands on Luffy’s character.
3. Turn-based combat in One Piece Odyssey
Most of Bandai Namco’s games have a traditional JRPG style, which means One Piece Odyssey will still use a turn-based combat system. The way to perform attacks or skills in the second trailer makes us feel the gameplay of the typical 3D turn-based role-playing genre similar to Dragon Quest XI. The game will also have team-combining moves similar to Team Attack in Chrono Trigger, typically you can see Luffy, Usopp and Zoro perform a combination attack quite beautifully. There is still a possibility that it will be an action role-playing game, but still have to wait for Bandai Namco to confirm.
4. Details of the interview with the developer
Live interview with Katsuaki Tsuzuki, the game’s producer at Bandai Namco. Note that the game was developed by Ilca, the same team that developed with Bandai Namco on the highly successful Idolmaster Starlit Season project, the same studio behind the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes. During the interview, Katsuaki Tsuzuki explained most notably that Eiichiro Oda gave advice to the development team to design the locations, original characters, and monsters in the game. They had to create a lot of new locations to give the game a sense of adventure and wanted to make sure everything matched the authentic One Piece feel that the anime and manga gave viewers.
5. New character named Adio Suerte
In the game’s trailer, there is also the appearance of a new character with a tattoo in the trailer. While his name is not revealed in the trailer, the Japanese docs in the interview above indicate his name is Adio Suerte, in addition to the interview revealing several other original characters.
Those are all the details you need to know in One Piece Odyssey. The series will also feature a Netflix live-action series and a new anime movie titled One Piece Film Red.
