The father of two brought immense joy to his family when he decided to stop smoking for a moment.
Dursun Kocyigit, 49, has just become a millionaire in Turkey by using money to buy cigarettes to buy a lottery.
Mr. Kocyigit used the last remaining cash in his pocket to buy the Millionaires Club lottery in Tokat, a city in north-central Turkey.
The place where he bought his ticket was a convenience store that he frequented to buy cigarettes. Unexpected luck came when Kocyigit won about 2 million TRY (equivalent to 2.5 billion VND). Kocyigit couldn’t believe his eyes and had to ask the cigarette dealer to confirm the winning numbers.
Knowing that there was no mistake, Kocyigit recounted:
“I went to the market to apply for a job and only had 30 TRY (~ VND 38,600) left in my pocket. I thought: Or should I try my luck with this 30 TRY. And I won, I’m so excited. I immediately ran to the store clerk, both of us couldn’t believe it.”
Cigarette seller, named Yucel Ergin, said:
“A friend came and bought a lottery ticket at the store. I gave him a ticket and it turned out he won 2 million TRY. He is very excited and so are we.”
Dursun Kocyigit happily says he will use his winnings to start a business:
“I would give my son money to start a business, buy him a car and pay for his wedding. I will do my duty as a father.”
