Violet Evergarden ends with Violet wholeheartedly believing that Gilbert is still alive as she continues to live her life in hopes of one day meeting the major again.

Violet Evergarden: The Movie questions Gilbert’s fate after Hodgins stumbles upon a letter from isolated Ecarte Island – with handwriting extremely reminiscent of Gilbert. With this clue in hand, Violet and Hodgins go on a trip to the island to investigate. It was the last place they knew that Gilbert had lived all this time.
As it turns out, Gilbert is now a schoolteacher, helping children learn to read and write while trying to support a community facing massive casualties in war. However, he is anything but happy. Haunted by the past, Gilbert seems to have damned himself as punishment. He believes he made Violet unhappy and contributed to using her as a weapon. So he is consumed by an intense guilt, believing he will only cause Violet more pain. This is why he never contacts her, and refuses to see her for much of the movie.
Rather, Gilbert did not think he was worthy of her love and trust. But to the end Violet Evergarden: The Moviethe guy gives in and wants nothing more than to have Violet by his side, implying a future where they overcome life’s trials and tribulations together.
